NEW DELHI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- India's ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Saturday nominated the country's incumbent Vice President Hamid Ansari as its candidate for the same post for a second consecutive term of five years.

With his nomination, Ansari became the second person in the country's history to be nominated for the post for a second consecutive term, the first being Dr Radhakrishnan.

Announcing Ansari's nomination, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said, "The alliance is honored to nominated him again. Ansari presided over the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) with dignity."

The UPA's nomination came despite one of its key allies, the eastern state of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress party, is against Ansari's second term as Vice President.

However, some of UPA's other key allies, like the northern state of Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party and opposition Bahujan Samaj Party, extending their support to the UPA.

Meanwhile, the country's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has said that it would field its own candidate to contest for the position of the Vice President later this month.
