Jayhawks in the NBA

the commentators benched him after the second turnover. rio benched himself after his fourth in four or five possessions. cole is solid and seems to play both sides of the ball with good defensive instincts. he also cuts harder after passing in the offense and is ready to shoot it when the ball is kicked to him. more of a score first point guard. its as if the rookie isn't intimidated by the setting. will be interesting to see once the minutes become meaningful or he starts missing some of those open looks but it appears you are right on chalmers losing his job last night. rio will have to step it up considerably to play meaningful minutes this year barring injury to cole.

Maldivian President Chief guest at SLMA Commissioning parade

The Army's premier seat of learning, Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa was honoured and received one more feather in its cap on Tuesday (27) when it had the most rare and distinguished honour of welcoming the first-ever foreign President to the year-end Commissioning Parade (Passing out Parade) as the Chief Guest.

A total of 189 Cadet Officers, including one Maldivian in SLMA Intakes No 72, 72B, SC 18C, Lady Intake (10) and Intake Vol 50 graduated in the colourful ceremony.

HE the President Mohamed Nasheed of the Republic of Maldives, at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, together with a 13-member delegation, including Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the Passing out Parade (PoP) as the first overseas President to have reviewed an SLMA parade.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development was also associated with the day's proceedings.

President Nasheed, the first-elected Maldivian President who spent years in exile in Colombo as Leader of the Maldivian Opposition before he was voted to Presidency, has been a longstanding friend of the country.

His 13-member entourage is comprised of Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Interim Chairperson, Maldivian Democratic Party (MP), Parliamentary Group Leader (MP), Maldivian Democratic Party, a few Parliamentarians of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Executive Service Secretary, President's Office, Under Secretary, President's Office and a few high-ranking officials, and is expected to stay in Sri Lanka for three days at the request of the Commander of the Army.

The day's military ceremony commenced after the visiting Maldivian President drove past the Guard Turnout at the SLMA main entrance in keeping with ceremonials before he was warmly received by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and the SLMA Commandant, Brigadier Priyantha Jayasundara.

The next moment was solemn as the Chief Guest walked to the SLMA cenotaph and paid floral tributes to the eternal memory of fallen War Heroes as the first segment of the day's itinerary.

The Commander of the Army and the SLMA Commandant afterwards ushered the visiting Head of State to receive the President's Salute as national anthems of both countries rent the air, bringing the gathering to attention.

As is the practice, the Chief Guest after receiving the President's Salute from the saluting dais was requested to review the parade of the new Cadet Officers in keeping with military traditions. He was joined by the Commander of the Army and the SLMA Commandant during the parade review. After the Parade Commander sought the permission to continue the rest of the proceedings, the next phase of the ceremony began with the presentation of different laurels.

The Chief Guest in the company of the Commander of the Army afterwards awarded the Champion Flag to the Best Champion Company and symbolic Swords to the newly commissioned Cadet Officers in the first row of the parade.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya followed suit and presented the same to the graduates in the 2nd and 3rd rows respectively.

With the commencement of the slow march and quick march, the parade marched past the saluting dais, and saluted the Chief Guest as the major section of the day's ceremony was gathering momentum.

One more climax of the day's event reached as the ceremonial award of trophies and swords of honour to respective newly commissioned officers got underway after the President Nasheed alighted from the saluting dais.

Prestigious Swords of Honour were received from the Chief Guest by Cadet Officer N.R.Y Cabraal (Intake 72), Cadet Officer J.S.I.S Jayamaha (Intake 72 B) and Cadet Officer R.P.M Lanka (Volunteer 50) and the presentation of trophies followed afterwards.

With the culmination of a brief formal speech delivered by the Chief Guest to the new graduates, the parade once again greeted the Chief Guest with a President's Salute as preparations were lining up for culmination of the day's main section of the proceedings.

As one more item on the agenda, at the invitation of the SLMA Commandant, the visiting Head of State planted a sapling in the premises and added a symbolic memory to his visit to the venue.

The visiting President of Maldives afterwards sat together with new graduates for a group photo since it would remain an immortalized souvenir for the rest of their lives. The customary commissioning dinner with full regalia were to follow late in the same evening (27) at the Officer Cadets' Mess with the participation of the visiting President and his entourage.

A large distinguished gathering of invitees, parents, next of kin, military officers, state officials and well-wishers took part in the PoP ceremony.

The 12 Most Anticipated Space Missions of 2012 (SPACE.com)

The space shuttle program is over, but that won't mean a lack of launches in 2012.

Between commercial and government spaceflight, manned and robotic, there's a lot on next year's spaceflight docket. For NASA, this year will bring the first private space cargo missions to the International Space Station, while China plans to launch its first crew to a brand-new space laboratory in orbit.?

Meanwhile, new NASA probes are due to arrive at the moon and Mars, among other places.?Here's a look at the 12 most anticipated space missions of 2012:

1. First Commercial Spaceship Flights to ISS

In the wake of this year's space shuttle retirement, NASA has been encouraging commercial companies to develop spaceships that can pick up the slack in carrying both cargo and crew to the International Space Station. [Vote for the Best Spaceflight Story of 2011]

In 2012, the first of these private vehicles is set to make its maiden voyage to the orbiting laboratory. The Dragon space capsule developed by Hawthorne, Calif., company Space Exploration Technology (SpaceX) is scheduled to launch atop the company's Falcon 9 rocket Feb. 7. A few days later, the craft is due to autonomously rendezvous with the space station. When it comes within range, the astronauts aboard the station will grab hold of it with the station's robotic arm and berth it to the outpost.

Another private spacecraft, the Cygnus capsule being developed by Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Va., is also set to make its debut in 2012. Cygnus is due to fly atop Orbital's Taurus 2 rocket in May.

2. Virgin Galactic Powered Flight

Another burgeoning field of commercial spaceflight is the suborbital space tourist industry. A leader in this market is Mojave, Calif.-based Virgin Galactic, headed by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson. Virgin Galactic plans to fly paying passengers on suborbital joy rides to the edge of space and back, initially at $200,000 a pop.

Virgin Galactic's vehicles, the space plane SpaceShipTwo and its mothership WhiteKnightTwo, have so far made gliding test flights. The first powered flights have not been announced, but experts are hoping to see SpaceShipTwo's rocket engines ignited for flights sometime in 2012. These test flights will be a major step toward flying space tourists, more than 400 of whom have already paid in full.

3. China's Manned Space Laboratory

China, a growing player in space, is working on its own manned space station. This year the nation launched its first space station test module and conducted its first in-orbit rendezvous and docking. Though these spacecraft were unmanned, Chinese astronauts are expected to fly on a subsequent docking test flight in 2012.

The Tiangong-1 module, launched Sept. 29, is still in orbit. The robotic Shenzhou 8 mission launched Oct. 31 and met up with Tiangong-1 multiple times before returning to Earth in November.

The next docking missions, which will further develop this critical skill for building a space station, will be Shenzhou 9 and Shenzhou 10. At least one of them will be crewed, Chinese officials have said.

4. NASA's GRAIL Probes Arrive at the Moon

On Sept. 10, NASA launched the $496 million Grail spacecraft (short for "Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory") on a mission to map the moon's gravity, to help learn about our natural satellite's interior and formation.

The twin probes are due to arrive at their target on New Year's Day. They will stay in orbit around Earth's moon for about three months, tracking the moon's gravitational field by measuring minute changes in the distance between the two spacecraft due to gravitational variations.

5. LightSail-1 Launches

LightSail-1 is an unmanned solar sail spacecraft being developed by the nonprofit Planetary Society, an organization that advocates space exploration.

Solar sail technology offers the potential to use the sun's radiation to push a spacecraft farther and faster than traditional propulsion does. The LightSail-1 vehicle is the first of three planned tests of the technology by the Planetary Society. It is due to launch sometime in 2012.

LightSail-1 is made of three small cube-shaped spacecraft attached to four triangular Mylar sails arranged like a kite. The vehicle will rely on pure sunlight for propulsion.

6. Dawn Probe Departs for Second Asteroid

NASA's Dawn probe, launched in 2007, has been in orbit around the asteroid Vesta since July 2011. Vesta is the second-most- massive body in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. [Photos: Asteroid Vesta and NASA's Dawn Spacecraft]

In July, the $466 millionDawn spacecraft is due to depart Vesta and head toward the dwarf planet Ceres, the only larger body in the asteroid belt. Its arrival is set for February 2015. The probe aims to study these space rocks for clues about the history of our solar system and the formation of the planets.

7. Curiosity Rover Arrives on Red Planet

NASA's huge new rover Curiosity, the centerpiece of the space agency's ?Mars Science Laboratory mission, is expected to land on the Red Planet Aug. 6.

The $2.5 billionCuriosity lifted off Nov. 26, 2011. It's the largest and most ambitiously designed Mars rover to date, packed with 10 different science instruments to search for signs that Mars is, or ever was, habitable to life.

The landing is expected to be a nail-biter, as Curiosity is due to descend to the planet's surface as no vehicle has done before. NASA engineers devised a sky crane descent module that will parachute down to hover over Mars, then lower Curiosity on tethers to a gentle touchdown.

8. Dream Chaser Drop Tests

The Dream Chaser is a private space plane built by Sierra Nevada Corp., of Colorado. This orbital flier is another bid to take over the task of ferrying NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.

When it launches to space, Dream Chaser will fly atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. But first, Sierra Nevada plans to conduct test flights of the vehicle closer to the ground during the summer.

For Dream Chaser's first test flight, the space plane will be lofted to high altitudes by Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo mothership. Then Dream Chaser will be dropped so it can glide back down to the ground, to test its landing capabilities. The test flight reportedly will take place from either Edwards Air Force Base in California or White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

9. Secret Air Force Space Plane Landing

The U.S. Air Force has a secretive spy spacecraft called X-37B in orbit right now. The unmanned space plane, operated by the Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office, launched atop an Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on March 5, 2011. It is the second craft of its kind.

Though officials planned for only a nine-month mission, the hush-hush is vehicle is expected to land sometime in early 2012. [Photos: Air Force's 2nd Secret X-37B Mission]

There's also a chance the Air Force will launch another version of the test vehicle next year. Though details are scarce, the spacecraft is designed as a prototype robotic long-duration platform for space-based Air Force activities. The X-37B's payload is classified.

10. Space Station Gets New Additions

The International Space Station, though practically complete, is not quite done with new facilities and tools.

The orbiting laboratory is a $100 billion, football field-size collaboration among the United States, Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and Canada.

In May 2012, Russia will launch the Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MPLM), a new room to be added onto the space station's Zvezda nadir port, replacing the Pirs docking compartment currently there. Nauka will house science experiments and cargo and will be used for docking, as well as work and rest areas for the crew.

The same Russian Proton rocket that launches Nauka will carry the European Robotic Arm. This new tool will be attached to the Russian side of the space station to assist with work on the station's exterior.

11. Planetary Exploration Milestones

Many of the robotic probes currently exploring the solar system will reach milestones next year. For example, the Cassini orbiter, which has been circling Saturn since 2004, will make multiple flybys of the Saturnian moons Titan and Enceladus, as well as distant flybys of many other moons, including Helene, Mimas, Janus, Polydeuces, Telesto, Pallene and Dione.

NASA's Messenger mission, which arrived in orbit around Mercury this year, will continue its up-close study of the planet closest to the sun.

And the agency's New Horizons mission, which launched in 2006, will come closer to Pluto than any other spacecraft yet. New Horizons is due to reach its target in 2015, when it will fly by Pluto to study the dwarf planet and its moons. The craft has already passed the orbit of Uranus and is due to pass Neptune's orbit in 2014.

Many other planetary probes will continue plugging along next year to advance scientists' goals of better understanding the solar system.

12. Permanent Human Presence in Space

It's easy to overlook because it's been happening for more than a decade, but the five partner space agencies behind the International Space Station will continue to send people to the outpost to maintain the human presence in space that's been constant since 2000.

Though NASA's space shuttles retired in 2011, the agency didn't stop sending astronauts to help crew the space station, which will continue to operate to at least 2020.

Twelve spaceflyers are scheduled to travel to the space station on four different launches in 2012. These men and women will spend around six months each living and working in space, performing experiments in a wide range of sciences inside humanity's only microgravity laboratory.

Note: This story was corrected to reflect that NASA's New Horizons probe will make a close flyby of Pluto and its moons in 2015, not go into orbit around the dwarf planet.

Macy's, Wal-Mart among holiday retail winners

Macy's Inc, Wal-Mart and others continue to get high marks from Wall Street as the busy season draws to a close, while Sears Holdings Corp proved that it was really not a jolly holiday for all stores.

Sears said it would close dozens of Sears and Kmart stores after seeing sales at its existing locations drop 5.2 percent from the beginning of the quarter through Christmas. Its shares plunged 21 percent on Tuesday.

The announcement comes two weeks after Best Buy Co Inc said that offering bigger discounts to kick-start the holiday season ate into its profits.

Retailers with the right mix of controlled discounts this season included Macy's and Wal-Mart Stores Inc, analysts said.

"I see Macy's as the market-share winner," said independent retail analyst Brian Sozzi, who said shoppers did not see "slash-and-burn discounting" at the department store chain.

"They are the destination place among department stores," he said.

Walmart's return to layaway helped the world's largest retailer and pressured others. Layaway sales, where items are put aside for customers until they fully pay for them, fell at Kmart, while Target Corp saw sales of toys crimped by Walmart's layaway push even before Thanksgiving.

Retailers are expected to ring up $469.1 billion in holiday season sales, or a rise of 3.8 percent from 2010, according to the National Retail Federation.

Meanwhile, U.S. consumer confidence rose to an eight-month high in December, the Conference Board said, suggesting that Americans have a brighter take on the economy heading into 2012.

The S&P retail index was flat on Tuesday, roughly in line with the broader S&P 500 index.

In general, analysts said that retailers did a good job of having the right level of inventory in place, which meant there was not a need for major panicked discounting.

In some cases, there were even items out of stock, such as certain watches and men's dress shirts in Macy's, said Sozzi.

But it appeared that few retailers predicted just how mild the weather would be so far in most parts of the country, leading to a glut of warm coats, sweaters and other items.

That could put pressure on companies such as winter outerwear makers VF Corp, which makes The North Face line, and Columbia Sportswear Co, said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners.

"While the economic tone seems a bit better, the lower-end consumer is still most constrained and thus we think investors are still best positioned in those companies targeting higher-end consumers," such as Tiffany & Co, True Religion Apparel Inc and Nordstrom Inc, said Caris & Company analyst Dorothy Lakner.

Lakner's favorite small and mid-cap stocks are Zumiez Inc and American Eagle Outfitters Inc, "where specific strategies set them apart from their competition," she said.

Among chains catering to teens, American Eagle appeared to have "better traffic consistently" throughout the season, while Abercrombie & Fitch Co kept its prices too high, even with discounts, said Sozzi.

American Eagle's success has come at the expense of the higher priced Abercrombie, which got hammered," said Johnson.

Another teen player, Aeropostale Inc, struggled without fresh fashion and lost out to competitors such as Forever 21, H&M and Fast Retailing's Uniqlo, he said.

Lakner also called out Children's Place Retail Stores Inc as one of retail's "best turnaround stories."

US 'to give Israel extra aid for rocket system'

Israel's defence ministry said on Sunday that the United States has agreed to provide it with an additional $235 million (180 million euros) to finance its rocket defence system.

"The aid from the American Congress is a supplementary step in the reinforcement of Israeli-American relations in the area of defence," Defence Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement.

The additional funds come on top of the three billion dollars of annual military aid given by the US to Israel.

This aid is entirely spent buying US weapons, in accordance with the terms of a 10-year bilateral deal signed in 2007.

Last spring, Israel put in place its "Iron Dome" anti-rocket defence system, financed by the US, to protect areas in southern Israel that are fired on from the Gaza Strip.

While the anti-missile batteries deployed near the Palestinian territory have offered some protection, they do not intercept all the rockets fired.

Jeremy Tinkel says investigators have no indication that Lemmon was abducted or what might have happened to her. (AP Photo/Allen County Sheriff's Department)

(AP) ? For the second straight day, police did not plan to search for a missing 9-year-old Indiana girl who has physical and emotional problems and went missing from a family friend's home on Friday.

More than 100 emergency workers conducted an extensive search Saturday for Aliahna Lemmon around the mobile home park on Fort Wayne's north side where she was last seen. No active search was done Sunday for the girl.

Allen County sheriff's department Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said a new search wasn't planned for Monday unless new leads arise through tips from the public or interviews.

Police haven't said why they called off the search after one day and aren't searching again. They also haven't said what they think happened to Aliahna.

Aliahna and her sisters were staying at a family friend's nearby home because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day, The Journal Gazette reported Monday.

Mike Plumadore, 39, told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.

"I had deadbolted the door," he said. "When I got back, all the girls was here."

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna's mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna's sisters, both 6 years old, told him that Aliahna had left with her mom.

Plumadore said it wasn't until he talked with Aliahna's mom about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.

Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, 28, said miscommunication between the two of them caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

"She's never wandered off," Souders said. "She's never done anything like this before."

But Aliahna does have a history of sleepwalking, even unlocking doors and going outside while sleeping, said her grandmother, Amber Story.

"I just hope that she's not suffering or in pain," Story said.

Souders said her daughter also has vision and hearing problems and suffers from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems.

In 2012 race, both sides seek middle-class voters (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Fighting to win over unhappy American voters, President Barack Obama and his Republican challengers are seizing on one of the most potent issues this election season: the struggling middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor.

Highlighted by the Occupy movement and fanned by record profits on Wall Street at a time of stubborn unemployment, economic inequality is now taking center stage in the 2012 presidential campaign, emphasized by Obama and offering opportunities and risks for him and his GOP opponents as both sides battle for the allegiance of the angst-ridden electorate.

For Obama, who calls boosting middle-class opportunity "the defining issue of our time," the question is whether he can bring voters along ? while parrying GOP accusations of class warfare ? even though he's failed to solve the country's economic woes during his first term in office.

For Republicans, Obama's potential vulnerability gives them an opening, but they also must battle perceptions that their policies favor the wealthy at a time when voters support Obama's call to raise taxes on the very rich. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has already made clear he'll resist Obama's attempts to capitalize on the issue, adopting the language of Occupy Wall Street in an interview with the Washington Post this month where he called the president "a member of the 1 percent."

For both sides, the question is how to find political advantage in light of a weak economy with unemployment above 8 percent. Since Obama is expected to run for re-election with higher unemployment than any recent president even if the economy continues to show signs of improvement, he must aim to set the terms of the debate in a way that helps him and hurts the GOP ? while Republicans will be working just as hard to deny him any advantage.

The president won a year-end victory Friday with the passage of a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut that had bipartisan support in the Senate.

The measure will keep in place a 2 percentage point cut in the Social Security payroll tax ? worth about $20 a week for a typical worker making $50,000 a year ? and prevent almost 2 million unemployed people from losing jobless benefits averaging $300 a week.

House Republicans had unsuccessfully attempted to push for further negotiations toward a yearlong extension, which allowed Obama to argue for the two-month extension of the tax cuts and prevention of a pending tax increase. The two sides resume discussions on the payroll tax cut early next year.

Obama's campaign pressed its economic argument Friday in an op-ed by Vice President Joe Biden in The Des Moines Register where Biden, taking direct aim at Romney, wrote that the former Massachusetts governor "would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

Romney, campaigning in New Hampshire, quickly countered that it's Obama who is hurting the country and expressed astonishment that Biden would have the "chutzpah ... the delusion" to write such a piece. "This president and his policies have made it harder on the American people and on the middle class," Romney said.

It was a preview of an argument certain to carry through the 2012 race, as the Obama campaign, viewing Romney as the likely GOP nominee even before any votes have been cast, works vigorously to define him early on, and Romney does everything he can to resist.

And the dispute taps into a striking reality. After-tax income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007 for the top 1 percent of the population, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found in a report this fall. But for the 20 percent of the population making the least money, income growth over the same period was only 18 percent.

Obama "is viewed as more likely to help the middle class than is the GOP, so he can capitalize on this by playing on concerns about inequality and contrasting his positions and the GOP's on issues like tax cuts for the wealthy," John Sides, political science professor at George Washington University, said by email. "However," Sides added, "it's an open question whether that strategy would enable him to overcome a weak economy and win."

Aides say Obama has long been concerned with economic inequality given his background in community organizing. But he brought the issue into much sharper focus in a speech in Osawatomie, Kan., earlier this month, where he reprised a populist message delivered in the same town by Theodore Roosevelt decades ago, and decried a growing inequality between chief executives and their workers.

"This kind of inequality ? a level that we haven't seen since the Great Depression ? hurts us all," Obama said at the time.

"This kind of gaping inequality gives lie to the promise that's at the very heart of America: that this is a place where you can make it if you try."

The issue has become a rallying cry of the Occupy Wall Street movement that's swept the country, with activists proclaiming "We are the 99 percent" ? as opposed to the "1 percent" at the top. And Obama advisers have identified this sense of inequality as the strongest current running through politics, one that they will be focusing on through Election Day.

But some polling suggests a note of caution for Obama in pressing the inequality argument. Gallup found this month that a majority of Americans don't view the country as divided into haves and have-nots. The polling also found that more people thought it was important for the government to focus on growing and expanding the economy, (82 percent) and increasing equality of opportunity (70 percent) than on reducing the income and wealth gap between the rich and poor (46 percent).

"The middle class certainly believes that it's in trouble and rightly so, because it is," said Bill Galston, a former Clinton administration domestic policy adviser now at the Brookings Institution. "But they are yet to be convinced that going after the rich will go to the heart of the problems that now afflict them."

That may suggest an opening for some GOP attacks against Obama. Romney charged in a speech in New Hampshire this month that Obama is pursuing an "entitlement society," versus the "opportunity society" that the former Massachusetts governor said he wants to offer the country. Newt Gingrich, Romney and other Republicans also regularly accuse Obama of "class warfare."

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod called such criticism the "Republican cartoon" of Obama's argument.

"In some ways the race will be different depending on who the nominee is but in some ways the same because they largely subscribe to the same economic theory" of cutting taxes for the wealthy and paring back regulations, said Axelrod. He added that Obama's speech in Osawatomie, Kan., "was a very, very good statement of his values and vision and will help frame much of what comes in the next year."

Kim Jong Il?s son called ?supreme leader? of North Korean military

PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA ? North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il?s son as ?supreme leader? of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the nation?s next leader even as millions continue mourning the father a week after his death.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father?s body is lying in state ? this time as ?supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces? and accompanied by North Korea?s top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il?s ?military first? policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers? Party, urged Kim Jong Un to accept the top military post: ?Comrade Kim Jong Un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people.?

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father?s choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of ?eternal president? even after his death in 1994.

Son Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defence Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People?s Army and general secretary of the Workers? Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers? Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father?s death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of discussions with the U.S. on food aid and restarting talks to dismantle the North?s nuclear weapons program. Chronically short of food and suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials had been asking for help feeding its people even as North Koreans prepared for 2012 celebrations marking Kim Il Sung?s 100th birthday.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people?s support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il?s ascension to ?supreme commander? exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong Un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to Kim Jong Il, ?praying for his immortality,? KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong Un, the report said.

?Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong Un over the army,? KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong Il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the ?Great Successor? in the wake of his father?s death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The official mourning period lasts until after Kim?s funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, mourners waited in line Saturday to bow and lay flowers at Kim?s portrait at plazas and government buildings, including the Pyongyang Circus Theater and the April 25 People?s Army House of Culture, even as temperatures dropped to 14 degrees below Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit).

Workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colourful thick parkas. A sign urged mourners to thaw out inside a heated bus. The order to provide food and warming huts for mourners came from Kim Jong Un, officials said.

Earlier, a throng of North Koreans climbed steps and placed flowers and wreaths in a neat row below a portrait of Kim Jong Il as solemn music filled the air and young uniformed soldiers, their heads shaved, bowed before his picture.

A sobbing Jong Myong Hui, a Pyongyang citizen taking a break from shovelling snow, told AP Television News that she came out voluntarily to ?clear the way for Kim Jong Il?s last journey.?

For days, life in Pyongyang had come to a standstill, with shops and restaurants closed. Downtown Koryo Hotel, one of several in Pyongyang catering to foreigners, was nearly empty.

But there are signs that the country is beginning to move on.

?Streets, buses and the metro are all crowded with people going to their work. They are not giving way simply to sorrow,? KCNA said. ?They are getting over the demise of their leader, promoted by a strong will to closely rally around respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.?

Among the mourners Saturday was a son of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the South Korean-based Unification Church, which has long-standing ties with North Korea. The Rev. Hyung-jin Moon helped carry a wreath to the main mourning site at Kim Il Sung Square in central Pyongyang.

The Korean Peninsula has remained in a technical state of war since the Koreas? 1950-53 conflict, but two groups from South Korea have permission from the South Korean government to visit the North to pay their respects, Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said Saturday in Seoul.

One group will be led by the widow of former president Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and the other by the wife of a late businessman with ties to the North.

Citizens in Pyongyang, meanwhile, received a last gift from the late Kim Jong Il: fish. State-run media said Kim was worried about the supply of fish and had looked into the matter the day before he died.

Rodong Sinmun showed a photo of a woman covering her mouth as she watched herring and walleye being distributed at a crowded grocery store where they were piled up in baskets.

JeffCo says FEMA owes them millions for tornado cleanup

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC)-

Jefferson County may be bankrupt, but it says FEMA and the state still owe it money from the tornado recovery. Commission President David Carrington says the county was reimbursed nearly $8 million of the $19 million that was spent on tornado cleanup.

Jefferson County government hasn't had a great year. But one thing they think they got right? Cleaning up from the April 27th tornadoes.

"It was a day we will always remember, it was a dreadful day in Alabama," said County Manager Tony Petelos. "But the quick response from the folks in Jefferson County and the municipalities, I think, just did great."

"Within 24 hours we did an RFP for cleanup, within 48 hours we retained Ceres, and within 72 hours we had boots on the ground cleaning up," said Commissioner? David Carrington.

That cleanup comes at a price. The county pulled $25 million out of its reserves immediately to start the recovery work, expecting that most of it would be paid back. But at the end of this year, they still have about $11 million that hasn't been reimbursed by either the state or federal government.

"You have to do the paperwork and it all has to be in order and I'm not gonna be critical of them in the speed," Petelos said. "But we hope to get this thing resolved quickly so we can move on."

Of that, the county may still have to absorb about $2 million dollars and not return that money to its dwindling reserves.

"Our cash flow won't be affected for several more months, but at that point, it could be a problem but we hope to have that settled by then," Petelos said.

The county is also in a fight with its storm cleanup contractor over about a $3 million dollar difference in what the contractor is charging and what the county thinks it owes.

It all comes from a debate about what to charge for removing certain kinds of tree stumps, minor, but Carrington says that $3 million question could end up in a lawsuit, which of course is on hold while bankruptcy is underway.

VT nears completion of HokieSpeed, world's 96th most powerful supercomputer

If basking in the presence of a powerful supercomputer is on your list of "must-haves" when selecting a proper university, then you may wish to fire off an admissions application to the Hokies at Virginia Tech. The school's HokieSpeed system is now in its final stages of testing, which combines 209 separate computers, each powered by dual six-core Xeon E5645 CPUs and two NVIDIA M2050 / C2050 448-core GPUs, with a single-precision peak processing capability of 455 teraflops. To put things in perspective, HokieSpeed is now the 96th most powerful computer in the world, and yet it was built for merely $1.4 million in loose change -- the majority of which came from a National Science Foundation grant. As a further claim to fame, HokieSpeed is the 11th most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world. Coming soon, the system will drive a 14-foot wide by four-foot tall visualization wall, which is to consist of eight 46-inch Samsung 3D televisions humming in unison. After all, with virtually limitless potential, these scientists will need a fitting backdrop for all those Skyrim sessions. The full PR follows the break, complete with commentary from the system's mastermind, Professor Wu Feng.

(AP) ? The Washington state ferry service isn't going to start turning away hefty passengers, but it has had to reduce the capacity of the nation's largest ferry system because people have been packing on the pounds.

Coast Guard vessel stability rules that took effect nationwide Dec. 1 raised the estimated weight of the average adult passenger to 185 pounds from the previous 160 pounds, based on population information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and about one-third of American adults are now considered obese, the CDC says on its website.

The state ferry system has complied with the new stability rules by simply reducing the listed capacity of its vessels, Coast Guard Lt. Eric Young said Wednesday.

"That has effectively reduced the amount of passengers by about 250 passengers or so depending on the particular ferry," said Young, who is based in Seattle. "They generally carry about 2,000, so it's down to 1,750 now."

With that many passengers, the ferry wouldn't tip over even if everyone ran to the side at the same time to look at a pod of killer whales, he said.

The state operates 23 white and green vessels on 10 routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands to British Columbia. Carrying more than 22 million passengers a year, it's the biggest ferry system in the United States and one of the four largest in the world, said system spokeswoman Marta Coursey.

The ferries themselves could be contributing to passenger girth. The galleys cater to customers looking for fast food they can eat while looking out the windows at the scenery and seagulls. Calorie counters typically aren't buying the hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken strips.

"We do serve light beer," said Peggy Wilkes who has worked 20 years for the food concessionaire, Olympic Cascade Services, which serves food and drinks on 12 of the state ferries.

News reports of overloaded ferries sinking in other parts of the world are sometimes a topic of discussion, she said.

"I think it's cool the Coast Guard is keeping up on that," she said. "Not that we overload them. A couple of times, like for a Seahawks game, we've had to cut off passengers and had to leave them at the dock."

Carol Johnston, who has been riding the state ferries since 1972, said she found the rule change perplexing.

"The ferries are not listing, they are not sinking," said Johnston, who was onboard a Seattle-bound ferry from Bainbridge Island Wednesday afternoon. "How are you going to establish how much weight there is on the ferry?"

Johnston worried about the potential loss in revenue, which could cause ferry fares to increase further. And she joked she may alter her eating habits.

"That means I will not have popcorn with my wine," Johnston said.

The reduced passenger capacity is unlikely to have much practical effect on the spacious ferries, said Coursey, the system spokeswoman. The ferries often fill up with vehicles, but the number of passengers, especially walk-ons, is seldom a problem, she said.

The new stability rules may have a bigger impact on the smaller charter fishing boats, such as those that take anglers fishing out of the Pacific Ocean ports of Westport and Ilwaco, Young said. Any vessel that carries more than six paying customers has to be inspected and certified by the Coast Guard as a passenger vessel.

O'Reilly asks Clinton whether he respects Gingrich (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Fox News' Bill O'Reilly finally got his long-sought interview with former President Bill Clinton on Tuesday -- and used the occasion to ask a timely question about Newt Gingrich.

"You worked with Newt Gingrich. Do you respect him?" O'Reilly asked about the Republican presidential contender and former House speaker, whose clash with Clinton led to a government shutdown near the end of 1995 and at the start of 1996.

Clinton paused briefly before responding, "I respect his ability to think and do and I eventually hammered out a really productive relationship with him."

O'Reilly was ready with a trickier follow-up: Did Clinton respect Gingrich as a man? Gingrich admitted in 2007 that he was himself in the midst of an affair as he led the impeachment of Clinton for lying about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

"I don't disrespect anyone who works with me in good faith," he said. "He was way more political than I would have been. He defended what he calls scorched earth politics and I certainly was the 'beneficiary' of it."

He noted that he and Gingrich "worked together for five years," but told O'Reilly there was no way he would vote for Gingrich for president. "No," he said. "I'm gonna vote for Obama."

Gingrich also appeared on Tuesday's "O'Reilly Factor," and was asked, in turn, if he respected Clinton. Gingrich said he did, and said he thought he understood why Clinton didn't want to praise him: "I don't think he wants to give you a quote that we could use in an ad next summer to try to draw moderate Democrats away from President Obama."

PocketCloud Explore arrives for Android, enables file searching and viewing across multiple computers

A new product has hit the Android Market and we think you might find it quite nifty. Known as PocketCloud Explore, the app allows users to search for and view files across their PCs and Macs, all without ever needing to surrender data to the cloud. Simple file management is also part of the game, as users can remotely create, rename and delete both folders and documents, as well as upload files from their smartphone to the remote destination. The basic version of PocketCloud Explore retails for $4.99, which is limited to two associated computers. For users juggling additional boxes and lappies, the developer plans to introduce a premium service that will allow access to a greater number of systems. Even the basic product, however, offers unlimited transfers, which means your files will always be within reach. Curious for more? You'll find the full PR after the break.
