Cal football: Penn State transfer Khairi Fortt arrives in Berkeley
BERKELEY -- Khairi Fortt, the newest Cal football player, arrived on campus at 2 a.m. Sunday, and spent his day completing paperwork, meeting his teammates and coaches and visiting with team doctors about his surgically repaired right knee.
The junior inside linebacker from Penn State watched practice and seemed remarkably alert during an interview for a guy who badly needed a good night's sleep.
"It seems like everybody's free spirited here, it's very diverse, everybody's cool about life," the 20-year-old Stamford, Conn., native said. "And it's a beautiful campus."
Fortt is one of nine Penn State players to depart the program so far after NCAA sanctions levied against the Nittany Lions on July 23 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
But his exit from State College, Pa., had virtually nothing to do with the yearlong crisis that led to the dismissal of the late coaching legend Joe Paterno.
Fortt (whose first name is pronounced Ky-ree) said he was ready to leave anyway.
"I wasn't happy with my situation at Penn State. It has nothing to do with the coaches there now," he said. "I had to make a change for myself. There were on-the-field issues, also off-the-field. Me and my family came to the consensus this was the best."
Fortt said Cal was among 36 schools that contacted him over the past two weeks, but the Bears had an edge because he nearly picked Berkeley out of high school. He opted for Penn
State instead because the Bay Area felt too far away from home and family."I was 17 and a little immature," he said.
Fortt, who is listed as 6-foot-2, 240 pounds and will wear uniform No. 13, is immediately eligible to play, according to terms of the NCAA sanctions.
How soon he's able to practice and play isn't clear. Listed as a co-starter on the Penn State depth chart when spring ball began, he underwent surgery to repair a ligament that stabilizes the patella. He actually tore the ligament back in the ninth grade, but it didn't become a problem until a few months ago.
Fortt, who hasn't even run since the spring, talked of "accelerating" the process so he can get on the field as soon as possible.
But Cal coach Jeff Tedford stressed Fortt has nothing to prove and no reason to rush back. "He's a smart guy and he's a veteran, so he understands how rehab works," Tedford said. "And he's confident enough he knows he doesn't have to come back too fast."
Fortt declined to answer questions related to the Penn State scandal, which led to substantial penalties, including a four-year bowl ban and scholarship limitations.
But he said many of his old teammates will be friends forever, and no one there tried talking him out of leaving.
He doesn't buy that the Penn State program will be crippled by sanctions. "They have a great set of coaches," Fortt said. "I think they're going to do very well."

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) ? Falling at speeds of up to 220 mph, nearly 140 skydivers shattered the vertical skydiving world record as they flew heads-down in a massive snowflake formation in northern Illinois.
Three judges representing the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, the international air sports agency, certified that 138 skydivers created the formation Friday evening over Ottawa, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago. It took 15 attempts over three days for the team to break the previous record of 108 skydivers, which was set in 2009.
"I feel amazing," Rook Nelson, an organizer and the owner of Skydive Chicago where the record was broken, said shortly after he made the jump. "There was a lot of emotion and a lot of days where we should have got it. But we dug down deep and stuck at it."
Following months of planning, tryouts and camps to decide who could take part in the dangerous challenge, the record breakers squeezed into six aircraft and launched themselves into the air at 18,500 feet. Flying at such a high altitude presents a risk of altitude sickness, so the skydivers and pilots used oxygen tanks aboard the planes.
Four camera operators shooting video and stills jumped with the 138 participants to record their achievement for the FAI judges. Those images are key, said co-organizer Mike Swanson, a professional skydiver who base jumped from Willis Tower and its fellow Chicago skyscraper Trump Tower for the movie "Transformers 3."
If no one records the 150-foot-wide formation showing all the jumpers in their pre-assigned slots, "then it wasn't really done," Swanson said.
The challenge for the record began Wednesday, midway through a 10-day skydiving festival. After each attempt, the organizers reviewed the videos and decided who should stay and who should be swapped out for one of the dozens of hopefuls who didn't make the initial cut.
"It's a hard job coming in from the bench," said Erica Tadokoro, from Brisbane, Australia. "You have to be positive because it's a team effort."
Tadokoro, 43, was one of just 13 women selected in the first string. She was cut after the 14th unsuccessful attempt ? one shy of the record jump.
Nelson explained that vertical flying is "basically doing a headstand" in the air. The lack of wind resistance speeds the skydivers' fall rate to an average of 170 to 180 mph. Ahead of the record attempt, he said some of those involved would need to reach much higher speeds. And that increased the risks.
If they're not paying attention when diving into the formation at upwards of 220 mph, "it's going to be like someone running a red light and you taking them out," Nelson said.
Each skydiver knew exactly when to exit the aircraft, whom to follow and where in the formation they should be. At 7,000 feet, the skydivers began to peel away on a last-in, first-out basis, and each wave deployed their parachutes at altitudes specified according to their positions in the formation.
"We don't want everyone to open their parachutes at the same altitude because then everybody lands at the same time. We stack the sky vertically" to avoid collisions, Nelson said.
The United States Parachute Association says that of an estimated 3 million skydives made across the U.S. in 2011, 21 were fatal. And most skydiving accidents happen under canopy.
Skydivers traveled from all over the world to take part in the record attempt, including from France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Belgium, Australia and the U.K. And one, 40-year-old Ahmed Sferi from Reunion, said he traveled for two days from his tiny Indian Ocean island home to reach Chicago so he could take part.

Egypt says border attack undertaken by Gaza, Sinai militants
CAIRO (Reuters) - The attack on an Egyptian police station on the Israeli border on Sunday was staged by militants who infiltrated from Gaza through tunnels and others from the Sinai region, an Egyptian security official was quoted as saying by the state news agency.
At least 15 Egyptian policemen were killed in the attack.
"Jihadist elements who infiltrated from Gaza through tunnels, in collaboration with jihadist elements from the regions of Al-Mahdia and Jebel El Halal, attacked a border point on the eastern border," the official was quoted as saying by the MENA news agency.
The official said the militants tried to escape to Gaza using two cars after the attack, but were "dealt with", MENA said, without adding any further details.

India's economic growth seen lower over lack of rain
India's economic growth could slip to near six percent this year with the country facing the spectre of its third drought in a decade, a top government policymaker says.
In the last few months, the outlook for once-booming India has worsened with high inflation, steep interest rates, a ballooning deficit, nosediving business confidence, a falling currency and now growing worry of drought.
"If we factor in that agriculture which will not be strong ... (growth) will be closer to six percent" for the fiscal year to March 2013, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia told reporters in New Delhi.
His forecast, delivered Friday, is down from the 6.5 percent expansion India notched up last year, and far below the close to 10 percent expansion seen during a good part of the past decade.
It comes comes as private economists also pare their growth estimates for Asia's third-largest economy, citing concern about "deficient" monsoon rains that sweep India from June to September.
A survey of economists and industry leaders by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, released Saturday, said the weak monsoon and a deteriorating global situation were expected to cut growth to between 6.0 and 6.3 percent.
Goldman Sachs economist Tushar Poddar forecast in a client's note even lower expansion of 5.7 percent.
The various projections are far below the 7.6 percent expansion initially seen in the Congress-led government's March budget and the 6.5 percent growth forecast by India's central bank earlier in the week.
While around six percent growth is still much faster than most other nations, the left-leaning government says much more rapid expansion is needed to lift hundreds of millions of Indians out of crushing poverty.
The weather office has forecast the rains will be "15 percent deficient" during the monsoon period which would spell drought.

The need for stimulus "on the back of persistent deficiency in the monsoon will turn the government's fiscal arithmetic awry," predicted Shubhada Rao, chief economist at India's Yes Bank.

Here are few criteria for novice exhibitors:
-Your bird should be in good condition -- all feathers smooth, no feathers missing or broken, unclipped flight feathers are best (for lovebirds, cockatiels and finches). Clipped wings are acceptable for parrots.
-Good feather condition can be achieved by daily misting your bird with a spray bottle
- It is preferable for the bird to wear a closed band but it is not a requirement in the novice division.
Ready to try? -- Here is how:
Come to the Denver bird show on the 15th and 16th of September at the Al Lesser building at the Adams county fairgrounds pre-registration Friday September 14th 1pm-6pm or Registration is from 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. on Saturday with Judging starting at 9:00 a.m.
Registration is from 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. on Sunday with Judging starting at 8:00 a.m.
For most of the birds there will be 2 shows a day so if you can't make the first one come down for the second!
Bring your bird in a simple cage (no toys or accessories- wire dog crates might work well for bigger birds -- or use your regular cage) - show cages are not mandatory for novices!
Show cages might be available for a low rental fee at the show -- please contact the club for details
Approach one of our friendly show secretaries and purchase a cage tag for $4 each that will allow you to enter your bird in one of the shows
Leave your bird in the capable hands of a steward and sit in the waiting area to watch the show- your bird will be safe during the judging process!
Showing birds is fun -- it allows you to meet other bird people
Bring your family and kids -- there is no age limit for showing -- ANY bird will be admitted and it is great fun for kids to see their bird getting judged!

China hits back at new US sanctions over Iran
Beijing reacted furiously Wednesday to new US sanctions imposed on a Chinese bank over transactions with Iran, urging Washington to revoke them and saying it would lodge an official protest.
China's foreign ministry urged the United States to lift the sanctions on the Bank of Kunlun, which it said violated the "norms of international relations" and damaged relations between Beijing and Washington.
US President Barack Obama on Tuesday imposed new economic sanctions on Iran's oil export sector and on a pair of Chinese and Iraqi banks accused of doing business with Tehran.
Obama said the new measures underlined the United States' determination to force Tehran "to meet its international obligations" in nuclear negotiations, according to a statement released by the White House.
The US president accused the Bank of Kunlun and the Elaf Islamic Bank in Iraq of arranging transactions worth millions of dollars with Iranian banks already under sanctions because of alleged links to Tehran's weapons programme.
In a statement, China's foreign ministry expressed "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition" to the US move, called it "groundless" and said it would officially protest the decision.
"Citing its domestic law, the US imposed sanctions on a Chinese financial institution, which seriously violates the norms of international relations and damages China's interests," the ministry said.
"China and Iran have normal state relations and carry out ordinary, open and transparent commercial cooperation in the energy and trade fields," it added.
"There is no connection with Iran's nuclear plans, no violations of United Nations' Security Council resolutions or other international norms and no damage to the interests of any third parties," the ministry said.
The banking dispute comes after Washington and Beijing clashed last month over proposed UN sanctions against Syria, which were vetoed by China and Russia, provoking criticism by the Obama administration.
The US has steadily worked to punish Iran over its nuclear development, which it has described as a key global security threat.
Iran says it has a right to enrich uranium for civilian nuclear energy and research. Western powers, however, fear it is attempting to stockpile enough highly-enriched fuel to have a "break-out capability" to build a bomb.
China's statement also said that Beijing is cooperating with various parties, including the US, to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.
The latest sanctions came on the same day the US State Department branded Iran "an active state sponsor of terrorism" in its 2011 annual terrorism report.
Separately, the US Treasury Department said that Bank of Kunlun provided services to at least six Iranian banks that have been placed under US sanctions because of their alleged roles in Iran's weapons of mass destruction programs.
Bank of Kunlun declined to comment on the announcement to impose sanctions.
