(AP) ? John Palmer, a veteran reporter for NBC News who covered wars and Washington over a career that spanned 40 years, died Saturday after a brief illness at a Washington hospital.

Palmer's wife Nancy confirmed he died at George Washington University Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 77.

The gentlemanly Palmer worked for NBC from 1962 to 1990, and then returned to the network from 1994 until 2002.

"John was a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century - from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11," NBC News said in a statement. "He covered five presidents and traveled to every corner of the world, always showing the empathy and compassion that helped set him apart. His kindness is remembered by all of us, and it built lasting bonds throughout our news division. "

He served as a correspondent in Chicago, Paris and Beirut, as well as at the White House. In 1980 he landed one of his biggest scoops, breaking the news of the Carter administration's failed attempt to rescue the American hostages being held in Iran. His reporting on the story brought him the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential news coverage, making him the first broadcast journalist to receive that honor.

"John Palmer brought to the White House beat his foreign policy experience and a steady reassuring voice, in good times and in bad," NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell said in describing Palmer for a report aired Saturday evening.

It was also at NBC's Washington news bureau that Palmer met his wife, Nancy, a Nightly News producer.

In 1982 he became news anchor on the "Today" show during a highly successful period when Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley co-hosted, bringing a seriousness and calm to the program while often being the first newsman that millions of viewers heard from each morning. He remained there until 1989, when he was abruptly replaced by Deborah Norville, who was being groomed for a co-host role, and handed her old job on the show that preceded it, "NBC News at Sunrise." Norville succeeded Pauley shortly afterward but was herself replaced after the show's ratings suddenly dropped.

In 1986, Palmer anchored the first hours of NBC's coverage of the Challenger space shuttle disaster, as well as other special reports.

Palmer left the network in 1990 to anchor a syndicated news program, hosted the weekly "Discovery Journal" on The Discovery Channel, and anchored a daily newscast on the TV channel of the Christian Science Monitor. His interview subjects ranged from Carter and Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan to Anwar Sadat, Jonas Salk and Chuck Yeager.

In 1994, he was invited back to NBC as a Washington correspondent.

Speaking to anchor Brian Williams on NBC sister network MSNBC upon his retirement in 2002, Palmer looked back on his tenure with satisfaction, including the access it gave him to a succession of the nation's chief executives.

"I was enriched as a kid from the East Tennessee mountains," said the Kingsport, Tenn., native, "to be able to go fishing with Jimmy Carter, to go to the movies with Ronald Reagan, and to play golf with Bill Clinton."

After exiting NBC, he continued to work in journalism, including through hosting roles on Retirement Living TV, a network dedicated to seniors.

Several of Palmer's colleagues praised him on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Major Garrett, chief White House correspondent for CBS News, described Palmer as "a brilliant, competitive, ethical and gentle man."

Susan Page, Washington bureau chief of USA Today, said she first met Palmer at the Reagan White House and described him as "one of the kindest/most joyful reporters on the beat."

NBC News reporter Chuck Todd said Palmer "epitomized professionalism at NBC News. And he was always generous with advice and counsel. A great news man."

Palmer was a graduate of Northwestern University and held a master's degree from Columbia University.

"John loved Sinatra, golf and fishing," Mitchell reported Saturday night, but she said he most treasured being a husband and father.

He and his wife Nancy have three grown daughters, one of whom is a producer for the Today show, one who works in the entertainment industry and one who is pursuing a journalism career in Washington.

Spartanburg Community College showcases new downtown campus

    Published: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:54 p.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:54 p.m.

SCC President Henry C. Giles Jr. walked a small group through the halls of the three-story Evans Academic Center, which will house SCC, Spartanburg High School's Viking Early College and the offices of S.C. Works Upstate.

The building, which dates to the early 1920s, has been under renovations for most of the last year, with nearly $19.4 million of work being down to restore some of the building's historic features and update other parts into state-of-the-art classrooms.

As workers painted, carried furniture and installed door fixtures and lights, Giles spoke of the restoration efforts. He said officials thought it was important to restore the building, constructed in 1921 for $300,000, to its former grandeur because of the role it has played in Spartanburg education.

The downtown campus was the original site of a wooden high school, built in 1897. It was replaced by the current building, which was Frank Evans High School from 1922 to 1933, Spartanburg High School from 1933 to 1959, and Evans Junior High School from 1959 to 1978, when it was sold to the county and used as office space.

The schools' graduates have paid particular interest in the renovations, Giles said, and efforts have been made to restore the entrances to how they would have looked decades ago.

?We would like their first thoughts when they come into this lobby to be ?This is my school,'? Giles said while standing inside the East Kennedy Street entrance.

The college also will have a ?Wall of History? that will show the building's legacy, while other features, such as the 515-seat auditorium and a gymnasium, have been restored to how they once looked. The auditorium has led to interest in the school eventually having theatre courses, Giles said, and while the school has no plans for the gymnasium, it could be used by nearby Meeting Street Academy or other groups.

He also said some have talked about the school starting a basketball team.

?That's not in our immediate plans, but who knows,? Giles said.

Giles showed off some of the building's original features, including crown molding and ornate brickwork, as well as dogwood blossoms and buds outside the Dean Street entrance.

?In today's dollars, we wouldn't be able to afford it,? he said of the building's construction.

Other small touches will be found throughout the building, Giles said. For example, the school's original master clock will return to where the principal's office once was, even though that space will now be part of the campus library.

?This is the way it looked,? said Joseph Lauer, a project manager and representative for the SCC Foundation, of the restoration efforts. ?It's come back to life.?

The campus will include offices, classrooms, laboratories, a bookstore and multiple study rooms and conference rooms, officials said.

?We don't have space like this on our main campus,? Giles said.

The classrooms, however, will be a far cry from the rooms the building housed in the mid-20th century, Giles said.

Each is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

?This will equal or exceed any classroom we have on our central campus, and I think it would equal or exceed any classroom on any campus,? Giles said.

The 107,000-square-foot building was purchased by SCC in 2011 in return for $3.34 million and ownership of the Dent Building on Fairforest Road.

The campus not only will allow SCC to expand, but will allow it to reach an underserved population near the city center, Giles said, while expanding partnerships with Spartanburg High School and S.C. Works Upstate.

Terry Pruitt, deputy superintendent of Spartanburg School District 7, said the Viking Early College would be the first of its kind in the Upstate, a male-only program that will prepare students for college while allowing them to earn both their high school diplomas and an associate's degrees.

The program will start with a class of 20 ninth-grade students and add a class each year.

?It is significant that this was Spartanburg High School,? Pruitt said of the building's history. ?It's like we're coming home.?

Rochelle Brown of S.C. Works Upstate said the new space would replace the current facility at 110 Commerce St. She said the new space will allow for the expansion of programs, twice the space for computers for job-seekers and more job fairs.

It also will help create a closer relationship with SCC.

?The space and the opportunities here are really giving us a chance to do new and unique things,? Brown said.

Edward Snowden Offered Job with Russian Facebook

The founder of Russian Facebook-rival VK has extended a job offer to NSA-whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Writing on his personal VK page, Pavel Durov said he was proud to be Russian following his government's decision to grant Snowden temporary asylum and invited the former NSA analyst to join his team.

Durov said he would be "happy for [Snowden] to join a stellar team of programmers" in VK's St. Petersburg office.

He added that Snowden may be interested in using the skills acquired at the National Security Agency to help protect VK's users: "In the end there is no more popular European company than VK. I think Edward might be interesting [in doing] protection of personal data for our millions of users."

    Particularly strong

VK - previously known as VK or ????????? in Russian - is the second most popular social network in Europe, with a particularly strong following in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It has around 200 million accounts and 45 million average daily users - compared to over one billion accounts and 665 million daily users.

It offers very similar functionality to Facebook with its core functionality including photo sharing, private messaging, status updates and news sharing.

The 28-year-old Durov, who founded the site in 2006 with his matematician brother Nikolai, has been compared to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and is known for his outspoken left-wing political and economic views. He is estimated to have a personal fortune of ?170 million, which is some way short of his US counterpart Zuckerberg who has an estimated personal wealth north of ?11 billion.

    Undisclosed

Snowden was granted temporary political asylum by Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday on the understanding that he cease leaking top secret US government documents. Snowden, who had been living in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for the past six weeks, left in a taxi to an undisclosed location.

While the temporary visa Snowden was granted only allows him to stay in the country for a year, comments from his legal representative Anatoly Kucherena suggest Snowden was looking to make Russia his long term home - and if that's the case he will need employment.

While working on a social network is not something to be found on Snowden's CV, it would be a major coup for VK to get Snowden on board, and help grow its profile outside of its stronghold of Eastern Europe.

Facebook Flirts With $38 IPO Price

    Article Excerpt

Rarely is there so much at stake in getting back to zero.

On Wednesday, Facebook Inc.'s stock briefly touched its initial public offering price of $38, hitting a marker that felt out of reach in autumn of last year, when the stock was in free-fall. While shares eventually drifted lower, to settle at $36.80, Facebook is still within striking distance of $38?a fact not lost on Facebook's investors, many of whom were burned in the company's botched IPO.

"There's some relief," said Chris Baggini, a senior portfolio manager at Turner Investments, a firm with about $9 billion under management that ...
