In 'Letter 44,' a secret threatens a US president

Secrets abound in America, but none on the scale as those revealed in the pages of Charles Soule's "Letter 44," a series where humanity finds the stars hold not just ambition, but a threat kept hidden.

The first issue of the series published by Portland, Oregon-based Oni Press Inc. was released Wednesday. It's illustrated by Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque, colored by Guy Major, lettered by Shawn DePasquale and edited by Jill Beaton.

Soule says the new series is a measured essay on the human spirit, and the quest for knowledge knowing that there is life up there and it may not be friendly.

The story centers on President Stephen Blades who is told about the existence of an alien presence kept secret for years by his predecessor. It's in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, it's unclassifiable, it won't communicate and it may be girding for war.

From there, it's one truth after another and it changes everything for Blades as a leader, citizen, father and person.

Soule said idea sprang forth in early 2011 about the time "when it was pretty clear that the last space shuttle mission was going to happen soon. The U.S. as a space power was going to change, dramatically."

Inspired by that change, he was walking along the beach in Cape May, N.J., and pondering what it would take for America, among others, to get back to the stars.

"I wanted to write the story about what we could do and, if we really need to, could we get back up there? What would be the incentive? In the 1960s, it was the Cold War and the space race," Soule said. "What could take us up there? The idea of aliens being up there, and then it all fell into place."

And so it does, with Soule's story focusing not just on Blades and the political ramifications of knowing what's up there, but also the crew of the spaceship Clarke, which is poised to make the first, human contact with whatever is there.

Soule said the pieces of both plots will come together, over the course of the series, and "everything will make sense," he says. "Even some of the weird stuff."

Lee's 31 points lead Warriors past Lakers in China

BEIJING (AP) — David Lee scored 31 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 100-95 preseason win over a Kobe Bryant-less Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in China.

Stephen Curry added 24 points for the Warriors, while Andrew Bogut had 14 rebounds and nine points. Lee finished 12 of 16 from the field.

"The way it's supposed to work is that we can get some stuff on the inside early in the game and that will open up the outside for guys like Steph to shoot 3s as the game goes on," the center said.

Nick Young led the Lakers with 18 points. Pau Gasol had 15 points and Chris Kaman scored 14 with 10 rebounds.

Although Bryant made the trip to China, he's sitting out the games to nurse a torn Achilles tendon and an ailing right knee. He was clearly missed by the Chinese fans, who chanted his name throughout the game.

Gasol said the Lakers faded defensively in the third quarter without their star.

"We don't know when Kobe's going to get back," Gasol said. "But until that point we just have to play hard as a team as we've been doing, and making sure we can't wait for him to get back and everything to fall into place at that point."

The Lakers play a second exhibition game in Shanghai on Friday.

The Warriors trailed 11 points at the end of the third quarter, but tied the score at 84 with just over seven minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Curry and never trailed again.

Golden State coach Mark Jackson said Curry has been healthy the entire offseason.

"I thought tonight for the first time in a long time he had a rhythm and he was the best player on the floor," Jackson said. "It was great to see and we expect tremendous (things) from him throughout the course of this season."

Curry said the team played "probably our best half in the second half all preseason."

Marvel Studios Reportedly Planning 5 — Yes, 5 — New TV Projects

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may only be the beginning for Marvel Studios’ television plans. In addition to persistent rumors that the studio is developing a show centering around Captain America: The First Avenger supporting character Sharon Carter, a new report from Deadline says that the company is shopping a package of four drama series and an additional miniseries to shop around cable channels and video-on-demand companies, including Netflix and Amazon.

According to the report, various unnamed providers have shown interest in the package despite the size of the commitment necessary — 60 episodes in total, presumably split between four 13-episode series and an additional eight-episode mini-series, as opposed to a more traditional commitment of 13-20 episodes at a time.

In theory, there’s a lot about this rumor that makes sense from Marvel’s perspective. Not only would an upfront, guaranteed-episode deal remove the worry caused by tumbling ratings — Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. lost 38 percent of its audience between the first and second episodes — but alternate content delivery systems may also be looking more attractive. The third episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. gained 52 percent more viewers when DVR views within a week of broadcast were factored in, and signs point to DVR-based viewing only growing in popularity over time.

The benefit for the companies bidding on the package is slightly more mixed, however. While it would allow them to advantage of the popularity of the Marvel brand, the falling ratings and critical grumbling about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have demonstrated that no brand is invulnerable, particularly when it branches outside of its established areas of success.

There’s also the issue of timing. Right now, Marvel is a hot property, but these shows wouldn’t be available to debut until mid-to-late 2014 at the earliest. What if Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy flop at the box office in the meantime — or the many DC Entertainment-produced shows currently in development (Batman spin-off Gotham at Fox, Constantine at NBC and The Flash at the CW, in addition to the currently-airing Arrow) simply overwhelm demand for superhero properties on TV?

Even with the considerable strength of Disney behind it, the package as reported by Deadline might be a gamble for whoever ends up buying it. If Marvel’s considerable success at the box office continues and the gamble pays off, however, an instant portfolio of Marvel projects could be a very lucrative thing indeed.

Marvel Studios declined to comment to WIRED on this subject.

Asia stocks ebb as US debt resolution awaited

BANGKOK (AP) -- Asian stock markets ebbed in holiday-thinned trade Monday as investors wait for a resolution to the U.S. budget deadlock.

With the Oct. 17 deadline to increase the U.S. debt ceiling looming, Republican leaders have said they would vote to extend the government's borrowing authority for six weeks while a spokesman for President Barack Obama said he would "likely" sign a bill to increase the nation's ability to borrow money. But negotiations over the weekend did not reach a conclusion.

An agreement could also end the partial government shutdown that has idled about 350,000 Federal workers without pay for nearly two weeks.

Trading was muted in Asia, with markets in Tokyo and Hong Kong closed for holidays.

Outside of those major financial centers, China's Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.5 percent at 2,238.39 and South Korea's Kospi was off 0.1 percent at 2,024.03. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.5 percent to 5,208.10. Markets in Taiwan and Southeast Asia were also down.

Wall Street rose for a second day Friday as investors bet lawmakers would reach agreement to raise the debt limit and prevent the U.S. from defaulting on its debt payments, a possibly that has upset markets since mid-September. U.S. government bonds are usually considered the world's safest investment, so even the possibility of a default is unnerving for investors.

The Dow rose 0.7 percent to close at 15,237.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 added 0.6 percent to 1,703.20. The Nasdaq gained 0.8 percent to 3,791.87.

In energy markets, benchmark crude for November delivery was down 13 cents at $101.89 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 99 cents to close at $102.02 on Friday.

The euro rose to $1.3563 from $1.3554 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 98.27 yen from 98.19 yen.

Today Is The Last Day For the 'International Herald Tribune'

An image showing the final front page of The International Herald Tribune, published Monday Oct. 14. The newspaper will become The International New York Times Tuesday.

New York Times

Monday marks the last day of newsstand sales of the International Herald Tribune, the newspaper that was once instrumental in keeping American expatriates up to date on their homeland. On Tuesday, the paper will bear a new name: The International New York Times.

"The paper has changed names a number of times since its founding 126 years ago," reads a story in the newspaper about the change, "but its mission has always remained the same: to provide a global perspective on events and ideas shaping the world."

A slideshow accompanying the Herald's story about the name change includes black-and-white photos of luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. reading The International Herald Tribune.

For decades, the newspaper was a cultural force, featuring in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises in addition to French director Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (or if you prefer the original title, À Bout de Souffle). In that film, actress Jean Seberg is seen hawking it on the street.

For our Newscast unit, NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports:

"The New York Times has owned the Herald Tribune for the last decade, and the name change is meant to streamline the company's print and online editions.

"Founded in 1887 by New York Herald publisher Gordon Bennett, the paper aimed to provide American expats living in Paris with news from home, from stock prices to the latest baseball scores.

"Charles Trueheart was the Paris correspondent for The Washington Post in the 1990s when the Post jointly owned the Herald Tribune with The New York Times. He says the Tribune began as a Paris local paper.

"'To me, the Herald Tribune represents a time when Paris truly was the expatriate capital of America,' he said.

"The Herald Tribune is sold in 135 countries."

(AP) ? John Palmer, a veteran reporter for NBC News who covered wars and Washington over a career that spanned 40 years, died Saturday after a brief illness at a Washington hospital.

Palmer's wife Nancy confirmed he died at George Washington University Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 77.

The gentlemanly Palmer worked for NBC from 1962 to 1990, and then returned to the network from 1994 until 2002.

"John was a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century - from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11," NBC News said in a statement. "He covered five presidents and traveled to every corner of the world, always showing the empathy and compassion that helped set him apart. His kindness is remembered by all of us, and it built lasting bonds throughout our news division. "

He served as a correspondent in Chicago, Paris and Beirut, as well as at the White House. In 1980 he landed one of his biggest scoops, breaking the news of the Carter administration's failed attempt to rescue the American hostages being held in Iran. His reporting on the story brought him the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential news coverage, making him the first broadcast journalist to receive that honor.

"John Palmer brought to the White House beat his foreign policy experience and a steady reassuring voice, in good times and in bad," NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell said in describing Palmer for a report aired Saturday evening.

It was also at NBC's Washington news bureau that Palmer met his wife, Nancy, a Nightly News producer.

In 1982 he became news anchor on the "Today" show during a highly successful period when Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley co-hosted, bringing a seriousness and calm to the program while often being the first newsman that millions of viewers heard from each morning. He remained there until 1989, when he was abruptly replaced by Deborah Norville, who was being groomed for a co-host role, and handed her old job on the show that preceded it, "NBC News at Sunrise." Norville succeeded Pauley shortly afterward but was herself replaced after the show's ratings suddenly dropped.

In 1986, Palmer anchored the first hours of NBC's coverage of the Challenger space shuttle disaster, as well as other special reports.

Palmer left the network in 1990 to anchor a syndicated news program, hosted the weekly "Discovery Journal" on The Discovery Channel, and anchored a daily newscast on the TV channel of the Christian Science Monitor. His interview subjects ranged from Carter and Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan to Anwar Sadat, Jonas Salk and Chuck Yeager.

In 1994, he was invited back to NBC as a Washington correspondent.

Speaking to anchor Brian Williams on NBC sister network MSNBC upon his retirement in 2002, Palmer looked back on his tenure with satisfaction, including the access it gave him to a succession of the nation's chief executives.

"I was enriched as a kid from the East Tennessee mountains," said the Kingsport, Tenn., native, "to be able to go fishing with Jimmy Carter, to go to the movies with Ronald Reagan, and to play golf with Bill Clinton."

After exiting NBC, he continued to work in journalism, including through hosting roles on Retirement Living TV, a network dedicated to seniors.

Several of Palmer's colleagues praised him on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Major Garrett, chief White House correspondent for CBS News, described Palmer as "a brilliant, competitive, ethical and gentle man."

Susan Page, Washington bureau chief of USA Today, said she first met Palmer at the Reagan White House and described him as "one of the kindest/most joyful reporters on the beat."

NBC News reporter Chuck Todd said Palmer "epitomized professionalism at NBC News. And he was always generous with advice and counsel. A great news man."

Palmer was a graduate of Northwestern University and held a master's degree from Columbia University.

"John loved Sinatra, golf and fishing," Mitchell reported Saturday night, but she said he most treasured being a husband and father.

He and his wife Nancy have three grown daughters, one of whom is a producer for the Today show, one who works in the entertainment industry and one who is pursuing a journalism career in Washington.

Spartanburg Community College showcases new downtown campus

    Published: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:54 p.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:54 p.m.

SCC President Henry C. Giles Jr. walked a small group through the halls of the three-story Evans Academic Center, which will house SCC, Spartanburg High School's Viking Early College and the offices of S.C. Works Upstate.

The building, which dates to the early 1920s, has been under renovations for most of the last year, with nearly $19.4 million of work being down to restore some of the building's historic features and update other parts into state-of-the-art classrooms.

As workers painted, carried furniture and installed door fixtures and lights, Giles spoke of the restoration efforts. He said officials thought it was important to restore the building, constructed in 1921 for $300,000, to its former grandeur because of the role it has played in Spartanburg education.

The downtown campus was the original site of a wooden high school, built in 1897. It was replaced by the current building, which was Frank Evans High School from 1922 to 1933, Spartanburg High School from 1933 to 1959, and Evans Junior High School from 1959 to 1978, when it was sold to the county and used as office space.

The schools' graduates have paid particular interest in the renovations, Giles said, and efforts have been made to restore the entrances to how they would have looked decades ago.

?We would like their first thoughts when they come into this lobby to be ?This is my school,'? Giles said while standing inside the East Kennedy Street entrance.

The college also will have a ?Wall of History? that will show the building's legacy, while other features, such as the 515-seat auditorium and a gymnasium, have been restored to how they once looked. The auditorium has led to interest in the school eventually having theatre courses, Giles said, and while the school has no plans for the gymnasium, it could be used by nearby Meeting Street Academy or other groups.

He also said some have talked about the school starting a basketball team.

?That's not in our immediate plans, but who knows,? Giles said.

Giles showed off some of the building's original features, including crown molding and ornate brickwork, as well as dogwood blossoms and buds outside the Dean Street entrance.

?In today's dollars, we wouldn't be able to afford it,? he said of the building's construction.

Other small touches will be found throughout the building, Giles said. For example, the school's original master clock will return to where the principal's office once was, even though that space will now be part of the campus library.

?This is the way it looked,? said Joseph Lauer, a project manager and representative for the SCC Foundation, of the restoration efforts. ?It's come back to life.?

The campus will include offices, classrooms, laboratories, a bookstore and multiple study rooms and conference rooms, officials said.

?We don't have space like this on our main campus,? Giles said.

The classrooms, however, will be a far cry from the rooms the building housed in the mid-20th century, Giles said.

Each is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

?This will equal or exceed any classroom we have on our central campus, and I think it would equal or exceed any classroom on any campus,? Giles said.

The 107,000-square-foot building was purchased by SCC in 2011 in return for $3.34 million and ownership of the Dent Building on Fairforest Road.

The campus not only will allow SCC to expand, but will allow it to reach an underserved population near the city center, Giles said, while expanding partnerships with Spartanburg High School and S.C. Works Upstate.

Terry Pruitt, deputy superintendent of Spartanburg School District 7, said the Viking Early College would be the first of its kind in the Upstate, a male-only program that will prepare students for college while allowing them to earn both their high school diplomas and an associate's degrees.

The program will start with a class of 20 ninth-grade students and add a class each year.

?It is significant that this was Spartanburg High School,? Pruitt said of the building's history. ?It's like we're coming home.?

Rochelle Brown of S.C. Works Upstate said the new space would replace the current facility at 110 Commerce St. She said the new space will allow for the expansion of programs, twice the space for computers for job-seekers and more job fairs.

It also will help create a closer relationship with SCC.

?The space and the opportunities here are really giving us a chance to do new and unique things,? Brown said.

Edward Snowden Offered Job with Russian Facebook

The founder of Russian Facebook-rival VK has extended a job offer to NSA-whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Writing on his personal VK page, Pavel Durov said he was proud to be Russian following his government's decision to grant Snowden temporary asylum and invited the former NSA analyst to join his team.

Durov said he would be "happy for [Snowden] to join a stellar team of programmers" in VK's St. Petersburg office.

He added that Snowden may be interested in using the skills acquired at the National Security Agency to help protect VK's users: "In the end there is no more popular European company than VK. I think Edward might be interesting [in doing] protection of personal data for our millions of users."

    Particularly strong

VK - previously known as VK or ????????? in Russian - is the second most popular social network in Europe, with a particularly strong following in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It has around 200 million accounts and 45 million average daily users - compared to over one billion accounts and 665 million daily users.

It offers very similar functionality to Facebook with its core functionality including photo sharing, private messaging, status updates and news sharing.

The 28-year-old Durov, who founded the site in 2006 with his matematician brother Nikolai, has been compared to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and is known for his outspoken left-wing political and economic views. He is estimated to have a personal fortune of ?170 million, which is some way short of his US counterpart Zuckerberg who has an estimated personal wealth north of ?11 billion.

    Undisclosed

Snowden was granted temporary political asylum by Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday on the understanding that he cease leaking top secret US government documents. Snowden, who had been living in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for the past six weeks, left in a taxi to an undisclosed location.

While the temporary visa Snowden was granted only allows him to stay in the country for a year, comments from his legal representative Anatoly Kucherena suggest Snowden was looking to make Russia his long term home - and if that's the case he will need employment.

While working on a social network is not something to be found on Snowden's CV, it would be a major coup for VK to get Snowden on board, and help grow its profile outside of its stronghold of Eastern Europe.

Facebook Flirts With $38 IPO Price

    Article Excerpt

Rarely is there so much at stake in getting back to zero.

On Wednesday, Facebook Inc.'s stock briefly touched its initial public offering price of $38, hitting a marker that felt out of reach in autumn of last year, when the stock was in free-fall. While shares eventually drifted lower, to settle at $36.80, Facebook is still within striking distance of $38?a fact not lost on Facebook's investors, many of whom were burned in the company's botched IPO.

"There's some relief," said Chris Baggini, a senior portfolio manager at Turner Investments, a firm with about $9 billion under management that ...

Gingrich, Reid Spar on Twitter Over Spending Debate

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has challenged Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to debate him on a possible government shutdown over the defunding of Obamacare.

"I would be happy to debate Harry Reid anywhere, any time about govt shutdown versus disastrous spending and destructive Obamacare," Gingrich tweeted Tuesday.

Reid shot back with his own Tweet, "@newtgingrich, to be clear, are you saying you support another government shutdown?"

The Georgia Republican said he wanted to debate the Nevada Democrat over whether the government should continue to fund Obamacare, even at the cost of a government shutdown, The Hill reported.

As House speaker, Gingrich presided over a government shutdown in 1995 due to an impasse on spending, which ultimately helped to hand Bill Clinton his re-election in 1996.

Gingrich, who will be a o-host on CNN's new "Crossfire" program, also tweeted an invite to Reid to appear on the show.

"Harry Reid would be a great guest on Crossfire this fall. We could debate the 1995 shutdown versus out of control spending and Obamacare," Gingrich tweeted Tuesday.

There have been calls among House Republicans this week to shut down the government if Obamacare is not defunded during the spending negotiations in the fall.

Sen. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, is circulating a proposal which is already being supported by Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and other conservative colleagues.

Nigeria: 24 die in blasts in Kano's Christian area

KANO, Nigeria (AP) ? Multiple explosions at a bar and entertainment area in a Christian quarter of Nigeria's northern and mainly Muslim city of Kano killed at least 24 people, a hospital official said Tuesday.

Lt. Ikedichi Iweha, a spokesman for the Military Joint Task Force, said earlier Tuesday that 12 people died at the scene and "a couple" of people were wounded in Monday night's attack, which he blamed on suspected members of the Islamic extremist Boko Haram network.

But the spokesman for Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital said their mortuary had 24 bodies brought from the scene and from the city's Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital.

The teaching hospital also was treating nine people wounded in the blasts, said spokesman Aminu Inuwa. It was unclear how many others might be in treatment at other hospitals.

More than a hundred people gathered outside the hospital morgue, weeping and screaming in anguish Tuesday afternoon. Military officials would not allow them into the morgue, so many said they have no idea if missing loved ones are dead or alive.

Nigeria is fighting an Islamic uprising by extremists based mainly in the northeast, where the government has declared a state of emergency. Kano city and state are in the northwest and not part of that emergency. Boko Haram, which means "Western education is forbidden," wants to impose Islamic law in all of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation of more than 160 million divided almost equally between Christians who live mainly in the south and Muslims who dominate the north.

Monday night's attack at just after 9 p.m. (21:00 GMT) rocked an area popular for its outdoor bars, blaring music, snooker tables and table tennis ? a place where people have fun, which is anathema to the militants.

Witness Kolade Ade said at least one blast appeared to come from a Mercedes-Benz parked beside the bar.

"After the first bomb, I threw myself into the canal (drain) to hide. There were at least three blasts," he said.

But Lt. Iweha said in a statement that the explosions were not the work of a suicide bomber but of parcels of explosives planted in the area.

"This latest incidence could have been avoided if citizens maintain vigilance to observe when packages are dropped, as it was in this case," he said.

The explosions came as hundreds of people thronged the area in the Sabon Gari neighborhood, and raised fears among the city's mainly Muslim population.

In March, a suicide bomber drove a car loaded with explosives into a bustling bus station in the same Christian neighborhood of Sabon Gari, killing 25 people.

Exactly a year ago, suspected Islamic militants attempted to attack a mosque in Kano city. They were engaged by police in running gun battles in which the militants killed five civilians and police killed four of the attackers.

In December, three days before Christmas, Kano was rocked by twin suicide car bombings that targeted two major mobile telephone companies. One worker was injured in one attack. Security officials botched the second attack by shooting the bomber, which caused an explosion at the company's gate.

In January, worshippers foiled an attack on Kano Central Mosque, killing two suspected bombers.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on May 14 in six northeastern states covering one-sixth of the country, admitting that Islamic fighters had taken control of some towns and villages.

Militants have targeted Muslim political and religious leaders who preach against their extreme form of Islam. Recently, the extremists have targeted schools, killing scores of students and some teachers.

The Boko Haram network is blamed for the killings of more than 1,600 people since 2010, when suicide bombers drove a car filled with explosives into the lobby of the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.

AP: Florida education chief helped GOP donor's school while in Indiana

    Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS --?Former Indiana and current Florida schools chief Tony Bennett built his national star by promising to hold "failing" schools accountable. But when it appeared an Indianapolis charter school run by a prominent Republican donor might receive a poor grade, Bennett's education team frantically overhauled his signature "A-F" school grading system to improve the school's marks.

Emails obtained by The Associated Press show Bennett and his staff scrambled last fall to ensure influential donor Christel DeHaan's school received an "A," despite poor test scores in algebra that initially earned it a "C."

"They need to understand that anything less than an A for Christel House compromises all of our accountability work," Bennett wrote in a Sept. 12 email to then-chief of staff Heather Neal, who is now Gov. Mike Pence's chief lobbyist.

The emails, which also show Bennett discussed with staff the legality of changing just DeHaan's grade, raise unsettling questions about the validity of a grading system that has broad implications. Indiana uses the A-F grades to determine which schools get taken over by the state and whether students seeking state-funded vouchers to attend private school need to first spend a year in public school. They also help determine how much state funding schools receive.

A low grade also can detract from a neighborhood and drive homebuyers elsewhere.

Bennett, who now is reworking Florida's grading system as that state's education commissioner, reviewed the emails Monday morning and denied that DeHaan's school received special treatment. He said discovering that the charter would receive a low grade raised broader concerns with grades for other "combined" schools ? those that included multiple grade levels ? across the state.

"There was not a secret about this," he said. "This wasn't just to give Christel House an A. It was to make sure the system was right to make sure the system was face valid."

However, the emails clearly show Bennett's staff was intensely focused on Christel House, whose founder has given more than $2.8 million to Republicans since 1998, including $130,000 to Bennett and thousands more to state legislative leaders.

Other schools saw their grades change, but the emails show DeHaan's charter was the catalyst for any changes.

Bennett rocketed to prominence with the help of former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and a national network of Republican leaders and donors, such as DeHaan. Bennett is a co-founder of Bush's Chiefs for Change, a group consisting mostly of Republican state school superintendents pushing school vouchers, teacher merit pay and many other policies enacted by Bennett in Indiana.

Though Indiana had had a school ranking system since 1999, Bennett switched to the A-F system and made it a signature item of his education agenda, raising the stakes for schools statewide.

Bennett consistently cited Christel House as a top-performing school as he secured support for the measure from business groups and lawmakers, including House Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate President Pro Tem David Long.

But trouble loomed when Indiana's then-grading director, Jon Gubera, first alerted Bennett on Sept. 12 that the Christel House Academy had scored less than an A.

"This will be a HUGE problem for us," Bennett wrote in a Sept. 12, 2012 email to Neal.

Neal fired back a few minutes later, "Oh, crap. We cannot release until this is resolved."

    By Sept. 13, Gubera unveiled it was a 2.9, or a "C."

A weeklong behind-the-scenes scramble ensued among Bennett, assistant superintendent Dale Chu, Gubera, Neal and other top staff at the Indiana Department of Education. They examined ways to lift Christel House from a "C" to an "A," including adjusting the presentation of color charts to make a high "B" look like an "A" and changing the grade just for Christel House.

It's not clear from the emails exactly how Gubera changed the grading formula, but they do show DeHaan's grade jumping twice.

"That's like parting the Red Sea to get numbers to move that significantly," Jeff Butts, superintendent of Wayne Township schools in Indianapolis, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

DeHaan, who opened the Christel House Academy charter school in Indianapolis in 2002 and has since opened schools in India, Mexico and South Africa, said in a statement Monday that no one from the school ever made any requests that would affect Christel House's grades.

Current Indiana schools chief Glenda Ritz's office declined comment on the emails.

Ritz, a Democrat, defeated Bennett in November with a grass-roots campaign driven by teachers angered by Bennett's education agenda.

Bennett said Monday he felt no special pressure to deliver an "A" for DeHaan. Instead, he argued, if he had paid more attention to politics he would have won re-election in Indiana.

Yet Bennett wrote to staff twice in four days, directly inquiring about DeHaan's status. Gubera broke the news after the second note that "terrible" 10th grade algebra results had "dragged down their entire school."

Bennett called the situation "very frustrating and disappointing" in an email that day.

"I am more than a little miffed about this," Bennett wrote. "I hope we come to the meeting today with solutions and not excuses and/or explanations for me to wiggle myself out of the repeated lies I have told over the past six months."

Bennett said Monday that email expressed his frustration at having assured top-performing schools like DeHaan's would be recognized in the grading system, but coming away with a flawed formula that would undo his promises.

When requested a status update Sept. 14, his staff alerted him that the new school grade, a 3.50, was painfully close to an "A." Then-deputy chief of staff Marcie Brown wrote that the state might not be able to "legally" change the cutoff for an "A."

"We can revise the rule," Bennett responded.

Over the next week, his top staff worked arduously to get Christel House its "A." By Sept. 21, Christel House had jumped to a 3.75. Gubera resigned shortly afterward.

    He declined comment Monday.

The emails don't detail what Gubera changed in the school formula or how many schools were affected. Indiana education experts consulted for this article said they weren't aware the formula had been changed.
