Invicta FC, Sara McMann and Women?s MMA: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.29.12

A weekend without the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator can often mean a weekend without happiness.? Okay, not really.? But if that actually is the case with you, please, get help.? Or get a hobby or something.? Anyway, there were no offerings from the aforementioned titans of mixed martial arts; however, last night the Invicta Fighting Championships had its second installment, and in terms of high-level MMA action, it pretty much rocked.? Therein lies where this morning's news is coming from.

  • Unless you were one of the lucky few to make the trek out to Kansas City to see the event in person, you were forced to watch Invicta FC via the free stream broadcast over the organization's website.? You were also forced to deal with a stream that was virtually non-existent for the first half of the fourteen-bout card, which, according to the event promoter Shannon Knapp, was attributed to crashed servers.? But hey, it was free, and when the feed was strong, we got to see some exciting stuff, like Strikeforce veterans Amanda Nunes and Liz Carmouche kick butt and take names.? Reviews of the event can be found here, here and here.? Personally, I rated it four out of five mouthpieces.

?

  • Olympic Freestyle wrestling Silver Medalist Sara McMann came away with another win in Invicta FC's thrilling main event, bringing her unblemished record up to 6-0 with a unanimous decision win over the ultra-tough Shayna Baszler.? The bout was a close one and hotly contested right up to the final bell; in the waning seconds, Baszler rocked McMann with strikes, and McMann was moments away from doing "the Worm".? But the bell rang and it went to the judges, and that was all she wrote.? The victory puts McMann in line for a shot at the Invicta FC bantamweight title, which is vacant and waiting for someone worthy to claim it.?

?

  • With over 200,000 purported Internet viewers, the first Invicta FC event was considered a success, and last night's numbers have to at least be in that ballpark.? So where does that put the current state of female MMA?? Probably in a very good place, especially with Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey's step up in exposure and Invicta FC already planning a third event.? Say what you will about women fighting, but there's a market for it ? and right now, that market is strong.

?

  • Yesterday was UFC president Dana White's birthday. ?I hope that in honor of the occasion you all cornered your pets and screamed at them "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?"? I know I did.

Mali president returns to crisis-wracked nation

Mali's interim president Dioncounda Traore returned to Bamako Friday amid tight security following a two-month stay in Paris for medical treatment after being savagely beaten in his office.

Armed, masked men kept watch on roofs as Traore landed at 5:20 pm (1720 GMT) in a country in a worse state of crisis than when he left it, greeted by embattled Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra.

Ex-junta leader Captain Amadou Sanogo, who led a March 22 coup, was also present.

Traore was attacked by a mob protesting his appointment on May 21, the eve of the official start of a transition period for a return to democratic rule in the troubled west African country after a March 22 coup.

Hardline Islamists have strengthened their hold on the vast desert north of the country, which they seized after the coup. The interim government which took over from the junta has proved powerless to deal with the occupation.

Diarra is trying to cobble together a wider unity government on the orders of mediators from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc to deal with the mounting crisis.

ECOWAS wants to send a 3,000-strong military force to Mali, but is waiting for United Nations approval and a formal request from Bamako.

Mali has until July 31 to form the unity government, a process which faces further hurdles after key political parties called for Diarra to step down, accusing him of "incompetence and amateurishness".

They also accuse him of having no clear plan to win back the north, saying his roadmap out of the crisis was "concocted under the pressure of events".

Traore, whose own party was one of the signatories to the statement demanding the prime minister's resignation, will have to decide whether to keep the astrophysicist in the post.

Burkinabe Foreign Minister Djibrill Bassole, who has been involved in mediation efforts, said Friday that if Traore needed more time to form the inclusive government "he can approach his fellow heads of state".

Traore also faces the continued influence of ex-junta leader Sanogo, who has been accused by the African Union of meddling in political affairs, and by rights bodies of overseeing torture and enforced disappearances.

Prime Minister Diarra, who has worked for NASA and was also the Microsoft chairman for Africa, is the son-in-law of Moussa Traore who became president of Mali after ousting a previous regime and ruled for 23 years until 1991.

Many in Mali see him as too close to the former putschists led by Sanogo.

Traore's main concern will be reuniting a country which has been effectively split in two by Islamists acting under the aegis of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, who are in control of an area larger than France.

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, the current rotating head of ECOWAS, said on Thursday he hoped for a resolution "in the coming days" on an eventual military intervention in northern Mali.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday his country was prepared to act as a "facilitator" in efforts to end the crisis.

"If we can be a facilitator of that which can be done in the interest of Malians and the sub-region, we will play this role of facilitator, no more, no less," Fabius said in Niamey after meeting Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou.

The French foreign minister is on his first tour to sub-Saharan Africa, which will also take him to Senegal, Burkina Faso and Chad.

He underlined that Mali needed to first restore security in the south, through the unity government, before turning to the north.

Fabius said that if the armed groups in the north refused dialogue, African forces must act "in a secure manner on the basis of international arrangements".

Peace Corps and Afghanistan ? ZERO ANTHROPOLOGY

The information and discussion about the activities of and the accumulation of various forms of capital by some Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs)?all in South America?is interesting (Anthropology News, December 2011, March 2012). President John Kennedy adapted the blast ?ask not what this country can do for you, ask what you can do for this country? from his prep school headmaster?s command ?ask not what this school can do for you, ask what you can do for this school?.

The predecessor of the American Peace Corps (PC) project was the ?Community Development? (CD) model housed in several American universities funded by the government and designed to coordinate various ?development? projects in foreign countries and to cloak the real intentions of the American ?foreign aid? program which was intervention in and control of the civil and political societies of the ?Underdeveloped World?. During the 1950s the University of Wyoming was engaged in such a project in Afghanistan. In early 1960s Michigan State University was deeply involved in community development projects in Cambodia, Laos, and South Vietnam. The MSU anthropology/sociology and political science departments and its School of Police Administration were leading participants in these programs. Wesley Fishel (political science) and John Donoghue (anthropology) were some of the MSU faculty I remember who were involved in course offerings and field projects connected to community development.

The Peace Corps was clearly an instrument of American post-WWII imperial stretch and Cold War strategy designed to undermine the presence and influence of the Soviet Union in ?Third World? countries especially those constituting the ?non-aligned? movement (led by Nasser, Nehru, Nkruma, Sukarno, and Tito) of which Afghanistan was a charter member. The American rage and hubris-driven imperial apparatus is a master of destruction, fragmentation, division, and separation. During the past sixty five years everything touched by this machinery (and its layers of real or imagined fear??we are about to be hit?) has turned to dust?from the Middle East (except Israel) to Korea to Southeast Asia to Iran to Cuba to Afghanistan to Iraq to Somalia to Yemen to Middle and South America. Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine are the most devastated and bloodied victims of this imperial stupor. This frustrated and stupefied American imperial disposition was consolidated and its components fitted with various cloaks during the 1960s. Its Peace Corps component was masked with a smile and equipped with elementary competence in local culture and spoken language of the Other?pamphleteer history and culture and nutshell colloquial Kabuli Farsi in the case of Afghanistan?essentially what the Human Terrain System currently provides its participants headed to camping out in Afghanistan. It would be interesting to systematically study the history and political and ideological moorings of the PC programs and operations in countries like Afghanistan, Egypt, Ghana, India, Iran, and Pakistan.

A Peace Corps Nurse in Afghanistan in 1973

The anthropologist Louis Dupree, the famous authority on Afghanistan with known CIA connections (Senate 35[52]: S4649-S4950, 1989), has written a chapter about PC in Afghanistan in Robert Textor?s 1966 Cultural Frontiers of the Peace Corps. The first group of PCVs arrived in Afghanistan during late 1962. Over the next decade the program expanded and stabilized into a level of comfort resembling the ease of thousands of Euro-American hippies who had found themselves scattered throughout Afghanistan and crowded into Kabul on their way to the spiritual highlands of northern South Asia.

Peace Corps operations in Afghanistan were terminated after the Kabul government was overthrown by the Khalq revolution in 1978. This and the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran intensified the level of frustration and rage in the American imperial hubris. To my knowledge only one PCV converted the Afghan experience into an MA and PhD in anthropology. During summer 1965 I served as an assistant to the area studies component of the PC training program for Afghanistan at the University of Texas, Austin. I remember constant whisperings about the CIA involvement in this and previous Afghan PC programs and the connection of some of its staff to the US intelligence agencies.

One of the Peace Corps Volunteers who spent years in Afghanistan and who was deeply devoted to, inspired by, and worked closely with Dupree was Thomas Gouttierre, current director of the popular Afghanistan Studies Center (ASC) at the University of Nebraska-Omaha Gouttierre has testified numerous times during the last three decades before the US congress on behalf of continued American intervention in Afghanistan.

?Peace Corps volunteers host a ?Hootenanny? for Afghan orphans (Kabul, 1965)?. Craig Shulstad entertains children with songs, while Thomas E. Gouttierre (just behind Shulstad?s right shoulder, looking down at the ground) stands next to his wife Marylu (sunglasses, to the right of Shulstad?s left shoulder).

The ASC housed the Afghanistan Studies Association (ASA) during the early 1970s and I served as its president during 1973-74 totally unaware of its ideology and political connections and activities. In retrospect the ASA served as an academic cloak for ASC. Gouttierre was the self-appointed secretary of ASA throughout its life course. Other PCVs with experience in Afghanistan who have been associated with the ASC at UNO include Christian Jung, David Champaign (currently advisor to the US military). The close connection between the ASC and CIA and other US government military and civil operation has been recently publically aired at UNO. Currently ASC works closely with the US Army?s Human Terrain System programs in Afghanistan. (See anthropologist John Allison?s report on Zero Anthropology.) The textbooks currently used in the schools of Afghanistan are produced by ASC. The center has maintained extensive ties with US military and intelligence operations in Afghanistan for the past 35 years. The ASC staff have produced several studies about the mineral resources of Afghanistan (e. g. works by Christian Jung, and Jack Shroeder).

Several US educated Afghans who have worked with the PC training programs as language instructors have become prominent members of the American occupation program in Afghanistan??Brown Skins with White Masks?. Mohammad Esmael Burhan, PhD University of Texas in linguistics, is currently a senior staff member at ASC. Ehsan Entezar, a favorite of PCVs for his legendary Kabuli attitude and humor, has written ?Afghanistan 101?, a fixture in virtually all American government libraries. Hedayatullah Aminarsala, currently the chief Kabuli advisor to Hamid Karzai, taught Farsi in several PC training programs for Afghanistan during the 1960s. His wife, Betsey Thomas, was a PCV in Afghanistan during 1965-67.

The number of PCVs with service in Afghanistan and associated with the American military and political operations in the country is difficult to determine. But based on what I have been told and what an educated guess suggests, scores of PCVs with experience in Afghanistan have participated in the American occupation machinery of Afghanistan. The impact of the attempted Euro-Americanization of Afghanistan by PC is not easy to gauge. However, some of this effect speaks for itself in the rubble of the state format of Afghanistan caused largely by the dark minded rage of the American imperial warfare machinery?the ideological and material parent of the so called ?Peace Corps?.

Gliese 581g Tops List of 5 Potentially Habitable Exoplanets

News | Space

Gliese 581g shot to the top of a list put out by researchers at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo?s Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) after a new study marshaled support for its long-debated existence

Gliese 581 This artist's conception shows the inner four planets of the Gliese 581 system and their host star. The large planet in the foreground is Gliese 581g, which is in the middle of the star's habitable zone and is only two to three times as massive as Earth. Some researchers aren't convinced Gliese 581g exists, however. Image: Lynette Cook

The controversial exoplanet Gliese 581g is the best candidate to host life beyond our own solar system, according to a new ranking of potentially habitable alien worlds.

Gliese 581g shot to the top of the list ? which was published Thursday (July 19) by researchers at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo?s Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) ? after a new study marshaled support for its long-debated existence.

The exoplanet was discovered in September 2010, but other astronomers began casting doubt on its existence just weeks later. Now Gliese 581g's discoverers have rebutted their critics' charges in a new paper, and have done so effectively enough to get the PHL onboard.

Here's a brief rundown of the PHL's top five habitable alien planets:

Gliese 581g
This rocky world ? if it does indeed exist ? is just 20 light-years away from our solar system. It's likely two to three times as massive as Earth and zips around its parent star, the red dwarf Gliese 581, every 30 days or so. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

This orbit places the planet squarely in the star's "habitable zone" ? that just-right range of distances where liquid water, and perhaps life as we know it, could exist.

Gliese 581g has at least four, and possibly five, planetary neighbors. The team that spotted Gliese 581g also detected another planet, known as 581f, circling much farther away from the star. But scientists are still arguing about that world's existence, too.

Gliese 667Cc
Gliese 667Cc, which was discovered in February 2012 by the same core team that spotted Gliese 581g, orbits a red dwarf 22 light-years away, in the constellation Scorpius (The Scorpion).

The alien world is a so-called "super Earth" that's at least 4.5 times as massive as our planet, and it completes an orbit every 28 days. At least one other planet resides in the 667C system.

Gliese 667Cc's parent star is part of a triple-star system, so the planet's night sky would probably be a sight to behold.

Kepler-22b
Kepler-22b was spotted by NASA's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope, which has detected more than 2,300 potential exoplanets since its March 2009 launch. Only a small number have been confirmed so far, but the vast majority should end up being the real deal, researchers have said.

Kepler-22b, whose discovery was announced in December 2011, is a super Earth about 2.4 times as wide as our planet. If the greenhouse effect operates on Kepler-22b like it does on Earth, the alien world would have an average surface temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius), researchers have said.

The exoplanet is found about 600 light-years away, and it orbits a star very much like our own sun.

HD 85512b
HD 85512b is another super Earth, one that's thought to be about 3.6 times as massive as our planet. The alien world is found about 35 light-years from us, in the direction of the constellation Vela (The Sail).

Astronomers announced the discovery of HD 85512b ? and about 50 other alien planets spotted by the HARPS spectrograph on a telescope in Chile ? in September 2011. The planet's estimated average surface temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

Gliese 581d
This world, which is about seven times as massive as Earth, orbits a bit farther out than its planetary sibling Gliese 581g.

He jokes about staying in a seedy motel room with a busted deadbolt and stains on the wall. But Caleb was making progress. Last Wednesday night, he performed stand up at the New Faces Contest at Comedy Works South in Denver, according to the Denver Post. He did well enough to advance to the next round of a comedy festival.?

It was to be a big week for the couple. Not only was Caleb getting comedy gigs, but he was about to become a father. Katie, a veterinary student, was nine months pregnant and her doctor planned to induce labor on Monday, July 23.

One last date night
Katie and Caleb decided to treat themselves to one last night out before they needed a babysitter. Even though she was nine months pregnant, they were huge Batman fans and they were not going to miss opening night.

NBC's Kate Snow reports on the shooting suspects court appearance Monday, as well as the status of some of the shooting victims, including Caleb Medley.

"They had Batman apparel on. They waited for this movie for over a year,? said David Sanchez, Katie Medley?s father.?

?They were having the normal opening night movie experience,? their friend Michael West wrote, recounting a conversation he had with Katie.? ?They stood anxiously in line, spent too much on popcorn and soda, suffered through the movie trailers and watched the beginning of the movie. That is when evil struck.?

?I thought it was a prank at first or someone playing along with the movie,? Katie told him, West writes. ?Then he opened fire.?

Caleb was shot in the face. He was put in the back of a police cruiser and driven to University of Colorado hospital. The website says he has lost his right eye, suffered brain damage and is in a medically-induced coma.

Katie?s father, Sanchez, was at the Arapahoe County courthouse Monday to see the man he blames for ruining what was supposed to be a joyous time for the family. He said his daughter had asked him to come since she was in no state to attend herself.

?When it?s your own daughter and she escaped death by just mere seconds, I would say, it really makes you angry,? he told a group of reporters outside the courthouse where the shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes made a brief appearance Monday. ?

Asked about his son-in-law, Caleb, he said, ?He's in critical but stable condition, so we're praying for him. I think the main concern is him right now, and the baby being born.??

Like many of the young 20-somethings at the movies that terrible night, the Medleys have no health insurance, according to their friend West.?

?Caleb and his family have no insurance, and these hospital bills are going to be well into the hundreds if not thousands if not millions. Caleb and Katie will be struggling with these hospital bills for the rest of their lives,? West wrote on the website.

In two remarkable stories of survival, one woman saves the life of her best friend, and a father protects his son's girlfriend after she was badly wounded. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

As you upsurge your holding income, you will slim down the deformation of graduate mortgage payments and add appeal to the assets at the aforementioned juncture.

8. Buy properties near low-interest financing. Low excitement tax support your capability to handle illustrious debt soundly. Look for mortgage assumptions, buy downs, or hawker funding.

Yes, complete the daylong term, owning real estate will sort you moneyed. Real property investing has made umpteen authentic material possession investors millionaires. But to get to the bimestrial term, you may have to leave behind through with several downturns, and unless you have heaps of bread (or appreciation) reserves to keep hostile these slumps, you'd better-quality remain tentatively formal.

Apple blames quarterly miss on new model anticipation, economy

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's results fell short of Wall Street's expectations as the European economy sagged and consumers held off on buying its flagship iPhone ahead of a new version expected in the fall, hitting its stock price.

Shares of the world's most valuable technology company shed more than 5 percent of their value after Apple - which beats Wall Street expectations with near regularity - reported its second quarterly miss on results in less than a year.

The stock slid to $570.81 in late trade after closing at $600.92 on the Nasdaq.

The disappointing numbers highlight how the Apple brand is becoming less resistant to the economic and product cycles that have plagued rivals.

Apple, which Tim Cook has led since last August, divided the blame for the shortfall between muted consumer purchases in Western European countries and the pullback in demand as consumers wait for a new iPhone model that many expect will be launched in September or October.

From April to June, Apple shipped 26 million iPhones, well below the 28 million to 29 million that Wall Street analysts had predicted, even taking into account a pause in buying ahead of the iPhone 5. It was a far cry from the 35.1 million that moved in the March quarter.

Sales of the iPad, the tablet that accounts for well over half the world's market, came in at 17 million in the fiscal third quarter, above expectations.

Apple, notorious for its conservative forecasts, estimated earnings for the September quarter of $7.65 a share on revenue of $34 billion, well below the average estimate of $10.23 a share on revenue of $38.03 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"It's a big miss. The guidance for next quarter was very low. I'll be very interested to know if it was a product transition or the economic" turbulence," said David Rolfe, chief investment officer for Wedgewood Partners.

"What is key is the mixture between iPhone and iPad. The iPhone has higher margins. iPhone sales were lower than expected - meaningfully lower - and that translates into a big hit on the bottom line."

The Silicon Valley giant has a lot riding on its next iPhone, the product that yields more than half its revenue and helps shore up overall margins.

Apple has seen Samsung Electronics - now the world's largest seller of smartphones - and other handset manufacturers using Google Inc's Android software chip away at its market share.

"It really is the iPhone company. The iPad is not strong enough to beat numbers," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "The iPhone 5 is already the most hyped device and for it to exceed expectations is going to be really hard."

MISSING TEMPERED EXPECTATIONS

Executives acknowledged buyers were refraining from purchases because of "rumors and speculation" around the iPhone 5, which sources have said will come with a thinner and larger screen. They laid part of the blame on sputtering demand from European economies like Germany and France, while dismissing the impact of a Chinese slowdown.

Revenue in the Asia Pacific region - which includes China but not Japan - shrank 22 percent from the previous quarter, far outstripping the 3 percent to 6 percent fall in revenue in the Americas and Europe.

"The economy in Europe is not doing well. We think this impacted our results," CFO Peter Oppenheimer said.

The expected roll out of a new Phone will likely pose a stiff challenge to rivals.

This was a reason why few investors were not expecting a blowout third-quarter as they remembered how chatter over a new iPhone last year caused Apple to miss quarterly expectations for the first time in years. The economic slowdown in Europe and China also made many investors nervous.

"We expected a lot of consumers will probably delay their upgrade and their purchases until the iPhone 5 comes out," Channing Smith, co-manager of Capital Advisors Growth Fund, said. "We saw a similar trend occur last year with the iPhone 4S."

Apple's fiscal third-quarter revenue rose to $35 billion, much lower than the average analyst estimate of $37.22 billion. It reported net income of $8.8 billion or $9.32 a share, compared to $7.3 billion or $7.79 a share a year earlier.

That lagged the $10.37 Wall Street had forecast.

Gross margin for the quarter was 42.8 percent, also lower than the expected 43.68 percent. Apple's hoard of cash and other securities now amounted to $117.2 billion.

"Apple is in that rarest of all positions where the Street will punish them for anything less than an excess of success," CCS Insight analyst John Jackson said. "If there's a positive spin on the iPhone story, it is one of latent demand."

New clues to the early Solar System from ancient meteorites

Monday, July 23, 2012

In order to understand Earth's earliest history--its formation from Solar System material into the present-day layering of metal core and mantle, and crust--scientists look to meteorites. New research from a team including Carnegie's Doug Rumble and Liping Qin focuses on one particularly old type of meteorite called diogenites. These samples were examined using an array of techniques, including precise analysis of certain elements for important clues to some of the Solar System's earliest chemical processing. Their work is published online July 22 by Nature Geoscience.

At some point after terrestrial planets or large bodies accreted from surrounding Solar System material, they differentiate into a metallic core, asilicate mantle, and a crust. This involved a great deal of heating. The sources of this heat are the decay of short-lived radioisotopes, the energy conversion that occurs when dense metals are physically separated from lighter silicate, and the impact of large objects. Studies indicate that the Earth's and Moon's mantles may have formed more than 4.4 billion years ago, and Mars's more than 4.5 billion years ago.

Theoretically, when a planet or large body differentiates enough to form a core, certain elements including osmium, iridium, ruthenium, platinum, palladium, and rhenium?known as highly siderophile elements?are segregated into the core. But studies show that mantles of the Earth, Moon and Mars contain more of these elements than they should. Scientists have several theories about why this is the case and the research team?which included lead author James Day of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Richard Walker of the University of Maryland?set out to explore these theories by looking at diogenite meteorites.

Diogenites are a kind of meteorite that may have come from the asteroid Vesta, or a similar body. They represent some of the Solar System's oldest existing examples of heat-related chemical processing. What's more, Vesta or their other parent bodies were large enough to have undergone a similar degree of differentiation to Earth, thus forming a kind of scale model of a terrestrial planet.

The team examined seven diogenites from Antarctica and two that landed in the African desert. They were able to confirm that these samples came from no fewer than two parent bodies and that the crystallization of their minerals occurred about 4.6 billion years ago, only 2 million years after condensation of the oldest solids in the Solar System.

Examination of the samples determined that the highly siderophile elements present in the diogenite meteorites were present during formation of the rocks, which could only occur if late addition or 'accretion' of these elements after core formation had taken place. This timing of late accretion is earlier than previously thought, and much earlier than similar processes are thought to have occurred on Earth, Mars, or the Moon.

Remarkably, these results demonstrate that accretion, core formation, primary differentiation, and late accretion were all accomplished in just over 2 to 3 million years on some parent bodies. In the case of Earth, there followed crust formation, the development of an atmosphere, and plate tectonics, among other geologic processes, so the evidence for this early period is no longer preserved.

"This new understanding of diogenites gives us a better picture of the earliest days of our Solar System and will help us understand the Earth's birth and infancy," Rumble said. "Clearly we can now see that early events in planetary formation set the stage very quickly for protracted subsequent histories."

Health and Fitness Issues Regarding Hand and Wrist Pain - Typepad

There is probably no worse aggravation than having hand or wrist pains and you do not realize just how important your hands are until you are unable to use them because they hurt so dog-gone badly. Just because you are in pain, does not mean you have severe arthritis or carpal tunnel, you may very well just have strained them from overuse or repetitious motion.

With all the technology we have now days, it?s very easy to strain your hands by trying to work the key-board on a mobile phone, or worse typing all day on a key board, but there are solutions to these problems and one of them, the one I ,most prefer also has something to do with technology. That?s right, I use technology to overcome the forces from the very technology that is hurting my hands and challenging my dexterity.

For instance, instead of typing all day on the key-board, why not invest in some voice recognition software. There are several versions to choose from; IBM makes a very powerful speech recognition software package. Microsoft includes it in their Vista Operating system, for both navigation and for use in word processor and email programs. Better yet, why not go buy the Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.0 and load that software on your computer.

Investing in Gold: Useful Hedge Or the Ultimate Emotional ...

Earlier this month, gold futures notched a negative 12-month return for the first time since July 2009, ?a rare occurrence over the past decade, happening on only 118 trading days, or just 4.5% of the time,? The Wall Street Journal recently reported. Over the same period, the S&P 500 endured a 12-month loss on 741 trading days, or 28.4% of the time.

I find it interesting that some of the most successful and widely followed professional investors are not necessarily bearish on gold, but rather loathe it as an investment and perhaps even as a topic of conversation. In response to a question about gold at our 63rd Annual Conference, in May 2010, investor Jeremy Grantham, cofounder and chief investment strategist at GMO, admitted he had recently bought gold, which was then selling at around $1,200 an ounce. He seemed almost embarrassed about it.

?I hate gold!? he told the audience at the time. ?It doesn?t pay a dividend, it has no value, you can?t work out what it should be or shouldn?t be. . . . [It?s] the last refuge of the desperate. I just got so sick of it going up I thought I?d kill it? by buying it.

About two years and $300 an ounce later, veteran investor Charlie Munger of Berkshire Hathaway went even further when he told Becky Quick in a CNBC interview that ?civilized people don?t buy gold.?

His opinion shouldn?t have come as a big surprise given his pal Warren Buffett?s well-known views on gold, but the vehemence of his statement suggests that he sits even further out on the ?gold spectrum? than Grantham, who was not above buying gold even while dismissing it as a rational investment.

I grew up in a family in which investing was part of the family culture. Dinner table conversations swerved into stocks, interest rates, and whatever else Lou Rukeyser had talked about the previous Friday on Wall Street Week. Despite this ?civilized? veneer, there were, alas, coin collectors in my family, so gold was also discussed, and ? horrors! ? occasionally even purchased. One instance of particular barbarity occurred at my grandparents? 50th wedding anniversary more than 30 years ago, when my grandmother, with great ceremony, presented my grandfather with a Krugerrand as his ?golden anniversary? gift.

I remember my cousins and I ? in an apparent fit of atavism ? passing it around the table, feeling its weight and admiring its color, blissfully unaware that we were running off the rails of human progress, at least as defined by Munger. (In defense of my primitive family, I must note that this was during the Carter administration, a time of great economic and geopolitical uncertainty, not at all like the world we live in today.)

In actuality, I suspect that neither Munger nor Grantham were directing their scorn for gold towards my family or others like us, but were perhaps instead revealing contempt for those on the other extreme of the gold spectrum, the retail ?gold bugs? we hear on the radio pitching gold investments without regard to price and to the exclusion of other assets.

While gold bugs can point at dreary 10-year returns for the S&P 500 and make the claim that gold has outperformed stocks over certain periods, no serious investor would make the case that this justifies a wholesale move from equities into gold, which would run counter to the notion of a diversified portfolio, a fundamental precept of prudent investing. After all, as the?Journal pointed out in the same article, the S&P 500?s total return over two decades is nearly 380%, beating gold?s 354% rise.

Furthermore, the arguments against gold are not invalid. It produces nothing; it is priced in an emotional, fickle market that may include nonrational actors; it is inherently subject to theft and incurs negative carrying costs if appropriate storage is arranged. (In fairness, the latter can increasingly be said of bank deposits).

But I believe that to state that gold has no place in the diversified portfolio is wrong, and that there is a wide range of reasonable perspectives on the gold spectrum that fall between the two extremes.

Matthew McLennan, CFA, portfolio manager for First Eagle Funds, might agree.

?Gold is a universal alternative to the man-made monetary system,? McLennan said in a recent interview with Morningstar. ?So when people have least faith in the man-made financial architecture, gold tends to be a decent store of value. And that makes it a useful potential hedge for our portfolios, that are primarily invested in enterprise.?

Or consider Kyle Bass of Hayman Capital, who as a trustee for the University of Texas, advised the university to purchase $1 billion in physically-held gold (which at the end of 2011 represented about 6% of the university endowment).

Asked why, Bass said ?Buying gold is just buying a put on the idiocy of the political cycle. . . . Capitalism without failure is like Christianity without Hell. You have to have atonement for ridiculous levels of spending both the U.S. and Europe have gone through. The spending idiocy of the world is going to catch up to itself. And that?s where we are today.?

Perhaps McLennan and Bass have a point. In a world of undercapitalized banking systems, overleveraged sovereigns, credit-rating agencies of questionable credibility, and a surfeit of political ineptitude everywhere one cares to look, perhaps it is rational to allocate a portion of one?s capital to an asset that is not someone else?s liability.

At the same time, the memory of holding my first Krugerrand reminds me, perhaps to Munger?s point, that gold can be an emotional investment, with a mystique deeply rooted in human history and culture, and it is probably wise to be conscious of that when considering whether, or at what price, to buy it.

Jim Grant, founder of Grant?s Interest Rate Observer and a longtime proponent of the gold standard, shares his perspective in the latest issue of?CFA Magazine.

Where do you sit on the gold spectrum??

Qantas Upgrade Includes Replacing PCs With iPad-Friendly Virtual Desktops

Qantas Upgrade Includes Replacing PCs With iPad-Friendly Virtual Desktops

Qantas has laid out an aggressive technology migration plan that could become an example for the airline industry.

Last week, we reported on the IT migration that Australian airline Qantas was undertaking. That migration and overall technology upgrade includes replacing the airline?s 1,300 BlackBerry handsets with iPhones, swapping hefty pilot flight bags for iPads, and adding an on-demand entertainment system to is fleet of Boeing 767 aircraft that?s accessed using iPads provided to each passenger.

It seems that the migration strategy is even bigger than just those three components. The airline is also looking to overhaul its desktop systems as part of an upgrade to Microsoft?s Office 365 cloud suite. The migration will be completed in partnership with Fujitsu and will include both on-premise and cloud data stores as well as virtual desktops courtesy of Citrix.?

One challenge raised by the plan, which was hammered out over six months of negotiations, is that Qantas will need to upgrade its aging computer systems. Those systems are largely PCs running Windows XP that aren?t suited to Office 365.

Rather than simply replacing those PCs outright, Qantas intends to use virtual desktop options from Citrix to deliver a Windows 7 desktop experience to its staff. Although the company didn?t give details of its virtual desktop plans, it?s quite possible that they include delivering a Windows 7 desktop or virtual application experience to iPad and iPhone users using the Citrix Receiver app ? presumably without the licensing challenges that OnLive ran afoul of with its OnLive Desktop app for the iPad.

According to ITNews, Qantas expects the upgrade to appeal most to its 11,000 cabin crew members. Whether that means by way of an iPad/Citrix experience or other devices like notebook PCs wasn?t specified.

The company is planning an initial virtual desktop pilot project this fall. If successful, it will roll out to 40% of the workforce by mid-2013 and eventually to 80% of its staff.

Qantas is planning an enormous upgrade to all its key systems. That?s an immensely challenging strategy considering that they?ll be rolling several new technologies out simultaneously. On the other hand, if the airline executes its plans successfully, it will be positioned as a model for the rest of the industry.

Buing Health Insurance? Read This Article First | Hostel 333

One obvious way to save money on health insurance is to dial your deductible up or down to meet your needs. For example, if you are healthy and have no dependents, you may prefer a high-deductible plan with lower premiums. Families and/or people who need more regular health care may prefer a lower-deductible plan since their annual health care costs will be higher.

When talking to your health insurer after applying for coverage, make sure that what you?re telling the person on the phone is 100% accurate. DO NOT leave anything out, or fudge a number, or exaggerate. Just like your application, total honesty is required in a follow-up call and if they find anything that you said was untrue, you WILL lose your coverage.

Consult with an eligible broker of medical insurance that is independent from the major insurance companies. This broker will have the information that you will have to search for and it is quite helpful to get their assistance when looking for a new health insurance policy for you and your family.

The cost of your health insurance plan greatly varies by state. Some states such as New York, offer some of the most expensive health plans in the country. States such as New York charge a higher rate because by law they are required to insure everyone regardless of their health.

Take out insurance to protect yourself against financial ruin. Health insurance should be one of the highest financial priorities on your list. Health problems are always a possibility, and if health concerns arise, the cost of hospital bills alone could easily bankrupt someone who does not have health insurance.

Check over your policy carefully before re-enrolling. The health insurance company that you have your policy through may have made changes over the last year and when you re-enroll these changes will take effect. Make sure you know what those changes are before paying your premium and re-enrolling.You may find that you do not like the changes and want to change providers.

If you are changing health insurance policies, you will need to consider your current doctor. If you have had this doctor for a long time, you may feel reluctant to lose him because your insurance does not work with him. If you will have a difficult time changing, consider your choices in advance.

When it comes to health insurance make sure you are not overpaying for drugs. When your doctor prescribes you medication make sure to ask if a generic is available on the market. If there isn?t ask him if there is another drug on the market that will have a comparable therapeutic effect at a fraction of the cost.

When considering a health care insurance plan from your employer, be sure to not forget about possible favored doctors and if they will be included in your plan. This is especially important to consider with an OB/GYN, dentist, or long time family doctor. Sometimes it may be more important to pay more for a different plan than to abandon your favorite doctor.

When shopping for health insurance, try one of the many websites that offer rates from several providers at the same time. Enter your information for the type of policy you want and find the rates for different companies offering the coverage you want. This can save not only time, but money too.

If you are in your twenties, you can save up money on health insurance by staying on your parents? plan. Legislation is different from one state to another. Do some research about staying on your parents? plan. Perhaps you can share this expense with them, to save money for the whole family.

Get copies of your medical records so that you can better check to see what is in them. You are going to want to learn if there are any medical conditions in it that might be red flagged by the insurance company. This may cost you a bit of money but it will be worth every cent in the end.

If you are covered under your parents health insurance plan, make sure to opt out of the student plans that are offered by your college. There is no sense in paying for multiple insurance coverages that you aren?t going to use. Find out your schools policy for waiving their insurance programs.

Always be on the lookout for new discounts. For example, many insurance companies will offer you a discount next year, if you don?t use your entire deductible this year. Some companies will send you gift cards or coupons for healthy items, such as food or a gym membership, in order to help you to stay healthy, which will prevent you from filing claims.

Read your health insurance policy carefully before you go out and buy glasses or get your teeth fixed. Most healthcare insurers offer dental as a separate policy, and many do not offer vision insurance at all. Better to know up front whether your vision care is covered than to be greeted with a bill from the eye doctor and not be able to pay it.

As stated at the beginning, there is quite a bit of information in regards to health insurance. Hopefully you will find these tips beneficial. You should now find yourself ahead of the game if you are working to become an expert, or just trying to get a bit of background information.
