PFT's NFL preseason power rankings

Posted by Evan Silva on July 12, 2012, 2:00 PM EDT

The 2012 PFT Preseason Power Rankings are slowly but surely moving up to halfway decent teams. The Cardinals can be a playoff contender if things break right. Or so we think. But they need to improve in areas we?re not so sure they can or will. But we?re listening to your opinions. We want to?

The Arizona Cardinals? 2011 season was considered a disappointment in large part because quarterback Kevin Kolb didn?t pan out. Just after last year?s lockout ended, Arizona sent cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2012 second-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Kolb. The Cards also signed Kolb to a six-year, $65 million contract. Kolb battled injuries,?

Things are different in Tampa Bay. Maybe not enough to move them out of the last spot in the NFC South, but it?s hard to think they?ll be as bad as last year. They?re still bad enough to come in at No. 26 in our Preseason Power Rankings, and they have significant ground to cover?

What the Buccaneers did last year under coach Raheem Morris was simply amazing. Turning a 4-2 start into a 10-game losing streak is almost unthinkable. There?s no other way to describe it than to say the Bucs simply gave up, losing the final five by an average of 23 points per game. That it didn?t?

The Dolphins might be ranked 27th in our Preseason Power Rankings, but they?ve got something that the 26 teams in front of them don?t have. They?ve got their very own summer reality series on HBO and that is going to give them a higher profile heading into the season than some teams that will wind?

The Dolphins are hoping that breaking one long tradition leads to the end of a shorter, more immediately meaningful one. By drafting Ryan Tannehill in the first round, the team ended a nearly 30-year run of avoiding the position at the top of the draft. Whether Tannehill turns out to be another Dan Marino (the?

Browns. Colts. Jaguars. Vikings. At least based on majority poll results accessible at the links above, you believe we ranked each of those teams pretty accurately in our preseason Power Rankings. We have them as the four worst teams in football. The St. Louis Rams are fifth worst. (Or 28th best, if you prefer.) How?

The St. Louis Rams have been the NFL?s worst team for the past half-decade. Their won-loss record over that span is 15-65 (.187), and they bombed terrifically after a seemingly promising 7-9 finish two seasons ago. Just one loss short of a 2010 playoff appearance, the Rams went 2-14 in 2011 and cleaned house in?

Buffalo could be the landing spot for former Baylor WR Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft. The Dolphins are also in the mix for Gordon, but are they desperate enough to upgrade at wide receiver to use a high pick on him? Patriots QB Tom Brady made a surprise appearance at a New England drugstore.?

The Vikings avoided the bottom three spots on the PFT Preseason Power Rankings. But not the fourth. The Vikings are No. 29 in our space-filling team-by-team previews. The ranking isn?t as relevant as the effort to summarize the team?s strengths, weaknesses, changes, looming camp battles, and prospects.? But if the ranking gets your juices flowing,?

A Christmas Eve win over the Redskins helped the Vikings avoid what would have been their worst season ever.? But the win came with a stiff cost. First, the Vikings lost running back Adrian Peterson to a torn ACL in that game.? Second, the Vikings? victory caused the team to miss out on a chance?

Veteran reporters who cover the Browns and Saints are the guests on today?s ProFootballTalk Live. Up first is Tony Grossi, formerly of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and currently of ESPNCleveland.com, who will discuss a Cleveland team that, in the opinion of the five of us who voted in the PFT Preseason Power Rankings, is the?

Oh, it could be quite a year in the AFC South, since it has already made two appearances in the PFT Preseason Power Rankings. The Colts weren?t the worst (that?s the Browns), but having Nos. 31 and 30 doesn?t exactly make it a banner year for the division. The Jaguars were deemed third-worst in the?

There?s a sense of renewal in Jacksonville, which is needed. New owner Shad Khan offers a high-energy, engaged presence, but hasn?t shown himself to be a meddler yet. Also, he has the best mustache in the NFL by a wide margin. But the fact he was willing to stick with an in-place general manager in?

The suspense was killing you, we know. After the Browns were installed at No. 32 in our Preseason Power Rankings, the suspicion began.?Who?s next? Get your Twitter warmed up, because it?s none other than the Indianapolis Colts. With all the changes they?ve undertaken, many of them deserved, it?s hard to imagine them much higher up?
